I am hoping someone can clear something up for me. I just read an article where Chris Lofton said he felt like Zeigler's jersey deserved to be hung in the rafters because of all he has done for the University of Tennessee basketball program. I don't disagree with that. But my question is, didn't Loften and Zeigler both wear #5? The article said that Lofton wanted Zakai's jersey to join his in the rafters. So does UT retire the jersey but keep the number? Maybe I'm missing something and I know that the best fan base in college sports can clear this up.

Yes. It’s just the jersey, not the number.

I think that ZZ was wearing #5 before it was retired.

UT has been pretty vague about whether they’ve been retiring jerseys or numbers. It should be jerseys, but has anybody worn 14, 20, 22, or 53 since they were put in the rafters?

Lofton allowed him to continue wearing it because that was ZZ's number when Lofton's was retired. I don't know the specifics of how they would retire both if they retired ZZ, but 5 will no longer be worn once ZZ is gone.

If the number was worn before it was retired, then it will be worn until the current player moves on or gives it up. Alfonso Soriano kept wearing 42 after it was retired because he was already wearing it. Rick Clausen opted to change to #7 after Tennessee retired Manning's. Steven Pearl did not give up 22 until he graduated.

For my generation, I believe it was always the number that was retired. Permanently. The honor in that was that no other player at that school would ever wear that number in that sport again. Meant for once-in-lifetime talents. I guess it’s changed.IMG_6204.jpeg

this is kind of interesting...

UT calls them retired jerseys

I did see a player with 22 on the 85-86 and 94-95 teams... Vincent Yarbrough wore 22 all of his seasons (98 through 02)... but that was probably pre-retirement

Retired basketball numbers didn't start until 2007. King 2007, Grunfeld 2008, Houston 2011, Ellis 2014, Lofton 2023.

Grunfeld and Creepy Pearl sharing the same number. That's just criminal
