I mean yeah. Most teams are going to put the senior with years of experience over the freshman.
i’m not going to reply again because i don’t want anyone to think i have a bone to pick with merk. i don’t . i’m just trying to have realistic expectations.

i can’t think of a single championship caliber QB who was below a walk-on on the depth chart his freshman year. there are dozens of examples of freshmen QBs being a backup in the SEC. i’m not saying that means Merk sucks. i just need to see SOMETHING suggesting he’s serviceable before I expect good things in 2025. iirc, when given the opportunity to play last year, he did not look good.

Merk has the most QB experience in the system currently. There was a lot of talk before the Nico mess going supernova that Merk was impressive across the board during spring practice. His HS reels are impressive in themselves. Heupel obviously saw something in him to recruit him here in the first place. All of that doesn’t really give us a crystal ball into what the season will bring, but it does give us something to calm some nerves and get behind this staff.

I’m ready to ride with either Merk or GMac. Both could be Tennessee legends if things align.

He redshirted, that's why he wasn't the backup.

Peyton Manning was 3rd string as a freshman too, so was Nico.
That's right, and Manning didn't have have a kick in QB3, it was him and Stewart. I don't think Manning was the best option on day 1 in 1994, and I think he has said as much. Dobbs was QB3 his first two years and maybe never would've seen the field if the other guys didn't get hurt. Butch got very lucky with that because they buried that guy on the depth chart due to how he practiced. You don't really know who your best option is until he's in the fire.

Love post O&W Game reactions and over-reactions. Remember when Jacob Carter & Jack Jancek had "huge" O&W Games?
I remember when guarantano and Dormady both lit up the orange and white game, then led us to the worst record in program history.
