I’ve seen reports that the coaches knew as early as January that Nico was shopping his services. If that is accurate, I’m curious how they adjusted QB reps in spring practice. I just assumed that Nico has been getting most of the reps, but if I’m a coach in this situation, I’m certainly trying to get the other two more than I typically would. I wonder if CJH adjusted his spring practice QB rep schedule to account for this. I know it would be a delicate dance doing this without raising alarms, but I certainly would have figured out a way to do it.

Maybe when the coaches read the papers in January….

Coaches obviously thought they could manage the situation and keep Nico around. The no show at practice indicates this was the coaches expectations. They were truly blindsided.

I wonder what the relationship w staff and players(free agents) actually is? Does the staff attempt to limit the options of the free agent to only certain times to "look around" or even never look around. We certainly know that players are looking around, a lot. And the rules allow them to. Does the staff have an open door where they realize that the free agent is always listening to opportunity?

I'm just really unsure about how all this plays out in the day to day. Fans of course have this romantic notion that it's all about blood sweat and tears and commitment to the big range or the big red or the big blue or big whatever. But, when a young man has options and they are legal options, then it's tough to say how staff would even go about limiting those options.

Welcome to the wild wild West.

Any word on Matthews since the rumors of Nico looking around is what almost made him hit the portal? Allegedly.

Any one else we might see hit the portal bc of Nico leaving.

have not heard of anyone at this juncture but even before this past weekend, they are expecting some players to go into the portal. In this era, its always possible that anyone may leave. For sure, many of them have been fielding calls from other programs.

Or they purposely kicked the can down the road to the spring portal so he couldn’t transfer in conference.
Without actually handing out the $4M he was supposedly asking for how could they "kick the can down the road" vs bigger offers before the door closed on SEC transfers? OM would've known the door would close so if they made a better offer how do you think UT "kicked the can" without actually matching it?

This possibility actually worries me more than Nico leaving.

Me too. I was mostly worried about Matthews but his instagram story was full of Tennessee stuff, as well as a clip of his catch from Merk. I kinda took that as a shot at nico and I felt better.

That's interesting. But regardless of what his father said to do, Nico's a man, is responsible for making his choices to skip practice and not answer calls, and is the one who has to deal with the consequences.
And he's also responsible for the actions of his father and his agent as his representatives.

It sounds to me like JH was pretty transparent on how things went down. Practiced Wednesday, Thursday was open day, went dark on Friday...See ya.

I'd imagine if we were aware back in January, they shut things down, rightly so, b/c he hasn't shown the ability to play to the level of his contract. From that point, maybe pops began fishing.
