Saban Fan Page Says It All

Most laughed at Saban when he warned us years ago about this. He was right. And to the ones who made fun of him retiring? Oh he is running because the talent advantage is Jo longer there? Get real. Imagine being in your kid 70s having to deal with the ****show that calls itself college football now. I doubt anyone on this board could do it at 40 let alone 70.

It's clear where unbridled capitalism ends. If no stops are put into place the conference with the most money will end up with 90% of the top players with universities paying 100 million in NIL just to be competitive. The rest of the schools will be left far behind. Probably the SEC will win this race. I figure something will be done soon.

When Saban opted to be a spokeshole for Progressive Insurance, was it because that was the one place where he could grow as a pitchman or because they offered him the biggest payout?

For a guy who's made a significant fortune well above what any college player ever will for decades, its a little hypocritical to criticize others for cashing in for a much smaller payout over a very brief window.

It’s complete hypocrisy. He did it to Michigan State, LSU and the Miami Dolphins… but it’s no fun anymore when it starts happening to him.

As much as I hate Bama didn't it always seem Saban was interested in Tennessee's success? While it did not work out he did tell Pruitt to come here when we were at our lowest and struggling to get a big name coach. I also was told Saban recommended Kamara come to Tennessee after he left Bama and went to Hutchison Community College and only had high praise for Kamara. Even as a commentator now I have been impressed with how complimentary he has been to Tennessee and our history. Don't get me wrong, I am sure Saban was hating life when we finally beat him but I think being an old school football guy he always knew CFB is better when Tennessee is strong.

Say it again and louder for the ones in the back Hoss.

It's not complete hypocrisy since Saban (or new school) had to pay a buyout every time he moved to "greener pastures".

I'm sure money is a factor but it's not the sole reason he does some of the things he gets paid for.

Saban makes more money from his car dealerships than he ever made coaching.

IMO, he pushed Dooley and Pruitt as great jobs for Tennessee because he knew they were not leaders but position coach's and never will be a HC material. I laughed when he said Dooley is really doing a great job for the Vols, same with Pruitt. He knew we were a dumpster fire and laughed all the way to the bank. When Saban got beat, he didn't go out of his was to say well Heupel is doing a great job at UT. Saban is about Saban he fools some but not me.

Can’t add much to this. Enjoy.

Everyone -- fans, coaches, and others -- have been saying for 2 years what we all know to be true. NIL and the portal are going to kill this sport. UT is now the cutting edge example of why this is true and I hope leads to some ki d of reform everyone can live with.

NIL and the transfer portal were part of the reason for Saban hanging it up and there is certainly some hypocrisy there considering how Bama got players over the years.

But we shouldn’t lose sight of the gist of the article (which was written by someone else who used a few old quotes from Saban). The post is about Josh Heupel and UT doing the right thing, and I applaud whoever wrote it. Pretty complimentary from a bitter rival. I think we gained a lot of respect across the country. Probably won’t last long but it’s nice to see.

And the reason he can chose to do things for reasons other than money is the tens of millions he earned coaching players who received no pay.

Wonder if Nick would support capping NCAA coaches' pay and limiting their ability to switch jobs to certain periods?

You aren't wrong but its not analogous.

A coach getting paid $8 million a year signs an elaborate contract. If he jumps ship ten months later for more money, he won't last long in the business.

The players seemingly jump at the chance to make more. And for many of them that probably makes sense as they won't make it to the NFL. So, a good but not great lineman might have a darn good reason to go from A, making $100,000, to B to make $150,000, and to C if he can make $175,000.

Its the stars, the top of the heap as it were, where this seems so greedy, probably because the amounts involved are so far out of the experience of ordinary folks that its hard to rationalize seeking $4 million when we paid you $3 million and next year you are headed to the NFL to make 10 times that.

I've actually heard Saban say that on television. Was shortly after his retirement I think.
He did say the part about 80% of the kids he talked to only wanted to know how much PT and money they were going to get. The rest is from someone else on the fan page. I still like the comments though.
