Merk gets new contract

Still kind of a bummer that now every time a player leaves or gets injured (McCoy-Gibson), the other players at the position don’t primarily see it as an opportunity to step up their preparation or leadership, but as an opportunity to leverage some more money out of the NIL fund. I get it, but still a bummer

The system will have to be fixed at some point.

Yeah. Not a fan of rewarding someone who has proven nothing. Wasted money on Nico sitting on the bench then being mediocre. Last year if we spent majorly on a QB via the portal the season may have been better.

It's a market thing. Hate it, but that's where we're at right now. Let's give him a chance

Every team has to invest these days. Like it or not, it's the new normal.
It's good to have it inked instead of a distraction hanging over the head.

With it out of the way, the focus can be on winning football games and
getting that return on investment.

This is a joke right? Why is a guy who hasn't played getting a new contract? If we weren't gonna pay Nico, why pay this guy?
Are we paying Merk 4 million per year? Did he holdout and skip practices while demanding a pay increase? If you answer those questions, you’ll probably have your answer.

I don't care if it's not close to the demands Nico was making. The point still remains that we didn't pay Nico cause his production last year didn't warrant a bump in salary. So what did Merk do last year to warrant a bump in salary?

Gained another year in the system and has the advantage to become starter.
If you don't see the difference between that and true freshman status, you won't understand any answer given.

What is the difference in terms?I would think a legit opportunity to start and then set his market value should be plenty enough to keep him here. Maybe the staff felt bad for paying Aguilar, a guy who just joined the team, more money and wanted to keep a healthy locker room..IDK. But after that O&W game performance, I wouldn't have budged much. G-Mac is going to be the one legitimately pushing for that starting role, not Merk.

I disagree.

Since a raise for G-Mac isn't noted, there must be (in Heupel's mind) little chance G-Mac actually beats Merk or Aguilar.

A raise for both Merk and G-Mac would mean Heupel is gearing up for a 3 man QB1 competition, but it seems he's only looking at a 2 man competition for QB1.

As an aside, if G-Mac DOES win QB2 or QB1, Merk will transfer in December. If he can't beat out the freshman G-Mac, he'll never beat out the freshman Brandon IMO.
