Official Ruling on the Lady Vols vs UCLA Controversy

And just for reference, here's a copy of Appendix G. If they wanted to, it would seem like they could have possibly applied example #4 (obstruction and interference) as a reason to allow the review, but at this point I'm just glad the ladies stayed focused and took care of business.

Whew. Thats a lot of butt hurt. 🤣

I sincerely hope you feel better. ❤️‍🩹

I’m willing to admit that needs to be addressed during the offseason. Remarkable that they spent the 15 minutes trying to figure out a way around the obvious.

Now. Had we ended up on the losing end of that call, idda found them bastards having dinner in OKC and given ‘em a sound Tennessee ass whipping.

lol...

I'm actually fine, and fortunate that I rarely get upset... especially over things I can't control.

As someone else said earlier, I also anticipate this play being discussed in future rules conferences, and new rules created to avoid that ever happening again.

I’m guessing it’ll spell the end of any teammate or coach approaching or touching the runner until the umpire has clearly signaled the player has touched home plate.

It’ll take away some of the natural exhilaration for the players to have to stand well clear of the hero for longer, but that’ll be the only way to ensure this doesn’t happen again.

I mean, you couldn’t blame the UCLA players for being excited and the heroine getting so caught up in it that she celebrated a little TOO much… but dang, ya gotta touch them plate! It’s not optional!

Better that the game was decided by actual play on the field rather than such a stupid rule anyway.

Call may have been wrong by rule book definition, but the right call was made for the spirit of the game.

It was a home run, who cares how/when/etc the base is touched.

It is fundamental rule that the run is not counted until the player has touched every base. And if there are more than one base runners, they must complete that in the correct order.

Yes, she hit the home run - but she must still complete what it takes to have that run be scored as a home run.

Fundamental part of softball (and baseball as well) - celebrate after you have done what you are supposed to do, not before.

Agree - rule change coming.

It being a "fundamental" doesn't make it any less stupid.

IMO they were looking for a way to circumvent the rule which was obvious so they really ruled that they could nt tell from replay if she missed the plate......when in fact it was obvious to a million people who were tuned in to the broadcast.

So you just want to change that game that anytime a home run is hit - the runner can just walk off the field without circling and touching all the bases?? And any runners on the bases can just do the same thing?

Sorry it is fundamental - a player should do that without thinking.

And these are fundamentals a player learns in youth softball and baseball - because OUTS are called there to enforce the fundamentals.

If it makes anyone feel better, the ump in the men’s game (incorrectly) called a ground rule double, which is an immediate dead ball, ruined at second, and then they let the runner keep third base when his dead-ball call was deemed incorrect.

There is a lot I don’t know, but both these calls were insanely ridiculous.

But it really isn't stupid.

What if the batter had totally, obviously missed one of the bags instead of home plate?

Like the poster above said, in order for a run scored to be official, all three bags and the home plate must be touched. If having to touch the bags and home plate is a stupid rule, then why even have the bags and plate at all? Just let the runners go in a general area and call it good? Nah.

Do you think the same call would have been made had a Tennessee girl hit the home run? I bet that review committee could have decided in two minutes flat.

The bags and plate are necessary for in-play ball. Requiring them to be touched on a home run does nothing to enhance the game nor does it do anything to ensure fairness in the game, The only thing it does is make the game worse by making us spend 10 minutes watching officials standing around reviewing replays over something so trivial.

Yes.

This forum's obsession with "omg everyone hates tennessee" needs to die.

Hell , just let them walk back to dugout after they hit, like slow pitch softball. I mean common sense tells you that you have to touch every base to complete the play.

That'd actually make more sense as it relates to impact on the game than the rule as it currently stands.
