Preseason FPI Rankings

i dont think we will be great but not a top 25 team?

nice job, Mark. some things never change.
Offseason click bait / need some ad revenue article. Ignore as the preseason rankings really don't matter as much as you think. I trust FPI and Vegas a lot more than I trust some copy and paste loser from ESPN who is using AI to write this dribble.

We either beat UGA early and get catapulted into the top 10, maybe even 5, or we don't and have to grind it out against the rest of the schedule.

i def dont get invested in preseason rankings at all. Like you said its pretty worthless. Lots of these media guys cant name 10 players on any of these teams but will turn around tell you what their record is gonna be lol

Mister "On the Mark" is off the mark

I can't say that guys like that underestimate Aguilar. I just don't think we know enough to project how he will respond to the higher level of competition.

I do think guys like him consistently overestimate Nico.

I am not in the camp that QB1 is his. Problem I have with Mark's take is there is little to no consideration to the other QBs or to RBs replacing Sampsons. Every O player will be an upgrade for JA, hope he benefits from that. Let the competition be fierce.

With question marks at QB, OL and WR and considering our best CB is injured being ranked 10 seems generous.

Agreed. Thats perfectly OK too. Dominance and dynasty are a thing of the past in this NIL era where the top 20 programs will all spend tens of millions of dollars per season. Making the playoffs about half the time is the most ANY team can reasonably expect in the SEC. This conference is a murderers row.

I do think that even in a rebuilding season this year we will have a top 15/20 team at a minimum. There arent 20 teams better than our VOLS this year...even with a new starting QB that has never started an SEC game. We have good talent on campus, over 50% of our players are Bluechips (Top300 composite) for the 1st time in 20+ years. We have a young but talented defense that was top5 last season. I believe our Oline will be BETTER than last seasons, and we have 2 studs at RB that will both produce with talent behind them if they get hurt. We will run the ball well again. Have led the SEC in rushing the past 2 seasons. Our questions are obviously at QB and WR. If we cannot throw the ball down the field we will struggle to score points.

I think we are looking at an 8-4 or 9-3 season. Start slowly probably in the passing game and take some time to develop. That said, we get the offense clicking and manage to knock off one of UGA, @t bama, @FU then watch out. Defense will be solid and we will run all over people especially if they spend the game trying to keep us from throwing it over their heads...which was what we faced vs the best teams last year.

I think most likely this year is 9-3, just miss the playoffs and end up ranked 12-15th to end the season. Now NEXT year in 2026? Preseason top10 team and we make a playoff run. 26,27,28 are all likely to be playoff caliber teams. The recruiting classes from 24, 25, and 26 will be full of good players IMO. The future is very bright on Rocky Top. GO VOLS

I don't fault people for having negative takes on Tennessee. Heck people are downing Georgia and other teams. I have heard stupid takes on a lot of programs around the nation from Sports Writers in the Off Season.

Tennessee is a very unproven team so I can't blame people for being down on Tennessee, I am not too high on us either. However, there is some ingredients there sitting around for greatness. In many of the positions where we lost people or have holes, there are younger players on the team that have high star ratings in recruiting and are clearly talented, even in the WR core. If these players come together, who knows what can happen.

I understand being a little apprehensive about Tennessee, but Heupel has proven himself. I think almost every year Heupel has been here we have had a top 20 rushing offense. I expect the same this season. QB has been unsteady at times in the past under Milton and Nico and we still had a good enough run game game to pull out some big wins.

I would keep us around top 20 and push us 10 spots either direction given the performance we get at QB. And even if we don't start out well, I believe Heupel will find the right combination by the end of year to have us clicking.

Which of those position groups was a strength last year? And didn't we still go 10-2 and make the playoffs?

You would think we were a team led by a high flying offense the way people are acting. Our strength last year was defense (specifically the defensive line). And guess what? We're still elite on the d-line with quality depth. Our linebackers are all a year older and coming back. And finally even if McCoy is out, it's not like Gibson isn't a future NFL corner as well and we did also land a potentially great transfer portal pickup at that position. Then you have to consider Boo Carter being a year old and more experienced.

This is why FPI has us rated so highly. It doesn't see unknowns at QB, WR, and OL as huge negatives considering those position groups struggled last year. And it acknowledges that our elite defense is likely to be elite once again. Considering we finished last year 9th in the Final AP Poll being 10th this year seems about right.

FPI looks at metrics not emotions. While fans and media are hung up on the transfer portal drama and sexy position groups like QB and WR.

I figured there would be some drop off at RB with Sampson gone. Hope I'm wrong.
