Phil Steele predicts order of finish for SEC Football in 2025

thinking this is a critical year for Josh Heupel’s tenure in Knoxville is pretty stupid. He ain’t going anywhere unless he wants to go.
Wouldn't say "critical', but I do think it's a pivotal year. This is now his roster and his chosen staff. He'll get a bit of grace due to Nico's departure, but let's not forget who hand picked Nico. Eventually, the buck will end up with Heupel, and I think this year might be the one where the worm turns for him. The pressure will grow over the next couple of seasons I suspect leading to his situation becoming "critical". As for next season, Steele seems spot on overall, but he's a bit generous with UT. I think SCjr will have a better season when it's all said and done so we'll finish behind them in the SEC. 7 wins seems about right for this bunch....maybe 8 with a bit of luck and we stay healthy which is far from being a given.

Phil Steele didn't have 4 of the (end-of-season) top-10 teams even listed in his top-25 teams for 2024... Including Tennessee.

Had Alabama #6 (went 9-4).
Had Oklahoma #7 (went 6-6).

Oops.

Seems Phil uses a dart board to simply guess, so his "predictions" are total ****.

He’s right about us having a ton of question marks. We start 4 new OL, a QB who got here last month, an almost entirely new WR corps, and we lost our de facto best player on offense last year at RB. Add in the amount of SRs lost on the DL, McCoy’s injury, and our inconsistencies at LB and the defense isn’t a sure thing either, from the outside looking in.

I have confidence in the guys we have being able to step up, but any reporter making pre-season predictions is going to be cautious about us for good reason.

Yep, when he first started, he became gold standard was getting most right. He got rich and defers to his minions to pen and puts his name on it and ppl buy up his article with clicks galore and he's laughing all the way to the bank.

I’m neither here nor there on Phil Steele as a reporter, but if you want to know why sports journalism has been nose diving in quality it’s because they have to cater to oversensitive fans that get vocally upset every time they don’t predict a top 3 finish for a team.

Also trying to grade a reporter’s pre-season predictions like a test is kinda asinine. You want them to be accurate, yet you want them to put us higher after two years of mediocre passing offenses and suddenly having to emergency replace our QB in the summer? We may have a great season, but the doubt cast upon us currently isn’t wholly unwarranted.

Yeah I think predicting our W/L record is just a guess right now for all the reasons you say. To quote the great philosopher Nate Bargatze: "No one knows".
