CBS Sports compiled their list of the 25 worst college football hires this century. Not surprisingly, we landed two of the top 10- Dooley at 10 and Beldar at 7. (Really surprised that clown wasn’t higher than 7 considering the havoc he wrought.)

Mike Price at a tie for #1 is pretty accurate since he never coached a game at Bama. I don’t even remember the guy at Pitt who is tied with him which probably says a lot.

Pruitt is the worst. His “stink” is still impacting the program.

Michael Haywood at Pitt-been about 10-15 years but I think he got arrested for DV like a month after he got hired.

He was on a recruiting trip or something and his wife met him to spend the night together and they got into a fight.

Notre Dame was involved somehow lol

About all I remember about him. Kinda lost track of him after that incident

Butch was 34-27 at UT and won 3 bowl games in 5 years after taking over a roster that Dooley had decimated. He also beat Florida and Georgia (more than once).

He wasn’t the right guy and should’ve been fired when he was, but to think he belongs on this list is silly.

I know I’m in the minority, but if Dools had hired a DC that was worth a damn (and he could galvanize a locker room) I think his story ends a little differently. I could be wrong. Of our coaches the last 20 years I dislike him the least.

I disagree.
Butch won 9 games 2x and 3 winning seasons out of 5.
Nowhere near 25 worst hires of the century.
I do think he was exposed without Jancek and DeBord. I am beginning to appreciate how much of Dobbs' ability to choose his moments came from DeBord. He was a really good coach.

Looking at that list, the guy who fired Bo Pelini at NEB, and hired Mike Riley, should be banned on the downlow from the business.

Charlie Strong earned a big job at Louisville, but looked lost at TEX.

Dooley never had control of 3 locker rooms.
I dislike that he was hired, Hamilton could have done so much better. A 50/50, just average, Defensive Coordinator and that offense would have won some ballgames.

Justin Wilcox was one of the best DCs we ever had. What he did with B level talent, and no depth, was impressive. Too bad he is a West Coast guy. I didn't even know coaches still said that.

Seems their choices were off based on their own criteria:

  • Does the program have the resources to win?
New Mexico? CSU? I saw those two and stopped reading. I think Dooley was the worst hire we have made in my lifetime.

Dooley would have never been successful if he had Buddy Ryan as DC. He’d just been fired the next year. The guy is a turd. No one else has remotely considered him for anything.

It was unquestionably a horrible hire and deserves a place in this list, but I'm not sure I'd put Price #1. The irony with getting fired amid a scandal before coaching a game is that the damage you can do is relatively limited. Is that really worse than a guy who stayed for a few years, lost a ton of games, and didn't recruit, like Chad Morris or Charlie Weis?

Morris was the worst hire, IMO. Not only did he go 0-14 in SEC play but only 5 of the losses were relatively close games.

They forgot the Fulmer-Kevin Steele debacle of a couple of months for almost a million bucks
That was such a strange (crazy) deal that one had to wonder if there was something else’s behind that. Can’t remember the names on the list Fulmer gave Donde but, was Steele on it? I’ve wondered if Fulmer was planning him as Pruitt’s replacement. The wildest component to that theory is that Steele went with the group to visit ToToo.

IMO, that was Fulmer angling to still have influence in the program in the event he was fired. He and Steele are buddies and go way back.

The writing was on the wall at that point for Pruitt, and Fulmer surely suspected his job was also at risk if the head coach he hired was about to be fired. So he brings a buddy onto the staff with a guaranteed contract as something of a poison pill, but the admin just took the hit and bought him out when they hired Heupel. Plowman did sign off on the hiring of Steele though, so I guess they were OK with it.
