Obviously this is just one of those offseason, can we please talk about football topics. I saw it asked on Redditt and thought it might stir some conversation here while waiting for the season to start. Just for clarity I really love our coach and am glad he is here. I actually think this topic made me appreciate him more after looking at what is out there.

For me:
Smart: yeah, probably. I hate to admit it but the dude is on top of the game right now.
DeBoer: Nah. I don't think he would be a step back and proved at Washington he can win but I like Heup better right now
Napier: Hell no.

Other coaches I would trade Heup for? That is tough. Day has the current NC but is he great or is Ohio State talent great? I am not so sure. Sark has been good at Texas but has a history. Guys like Kelly and Franklin are past their prime. I think the only two guys in addition to Smart would be Dabo and maybe Dan Lanning. I am not saying Heup is the 4th best coach in the country right now but he is already established here and I would really need a proven winner to go through the pain of another coaching change.

No. End thread.

What Heupel has done here in his short time is incredible considering where the program was.

But with that said, the best coach in the sport right now is Kirby Smart until proven otherwise. Assuming he would have the same desire at UT as he does for UGA, then it seems like a no brainer...but somebody has to knock him off that mountaintop. Might as well be Heup.

Anyone looking to trade Heupel is gonna have to go through me first.

We've won 71% of our games in the last four years. I ain't having it. The wheels come off, then we can talk. But 71% ain't wheels off. Ain't even check engine light. Hell it ain't even "time to take the car in for an oil check."

I sat through a decade of Fear the Pants, Butch "eff 'em" Jones, and Mr. I Hate Suits and I Hate Being Here. Through. Me. First.

Nah, I love CJH. He doesn’t just make me want to watch because UT is my team, he makes me believe in the program. I love his mindset: "If we can’t win this way, let’s find another way to win."

This guy is the embodiment of a QB-friendly coach. He can sling it across the field with the best of them, yet last year, we leaned on the defense and the run game to make the playoffs. A lot of coaches are stubborn - they want to win their way. But Coach Heupel says, “Let’s just win.”

Maybe that means he doesn’t get a million yards through the air or the top-ranked offense, but he understands the only stat that truly matters is the W.

Much respect. Also, he’s the only coach in Tennessee history to have 4 straight 2,500-yard rushing seasons. That’s incredible.

Rivals, nobody but Kirby (I think he is an underrated X & Os guy) Nobody at Ala, Fl, Ky, or Vandy.
This means I think Heupel should beat all of our rivals consistently based on average turnovers for both teams. Home field at Ala with DeBoer is a challenge.
Nationally not many. The SEC probably has the best coaches each school is willing to pay. Some can recruit but can’t game plan, others don’t have the personality to recruit
esp the better talent in the South.
The game is changing, particularly with the DL & OL. I see more transferring into programs, players that are already physically mature ready to start. Certain skill players can actually play out of high school. This and money will cover up certain deficiencies coaches may have and distort their actual abilities.

No. The stench of their prior associations would be too odious to endure.

The fact that we were dumb enough to hire Gumps to both our head football coach and AD positions in the past is enough proof that such things should be avoided.

I don't get all the love for people like Smart, Day, and Sark. When you are in a position where you can go out and load your roster with almost nothing but 4 and 5 star in-state boys who dreamed of playing at your school all their lives, you're naturally going to look like a freaking coaching genius. Tell you what, let's let Smart coach Kentucky for 3 or 4 years, and if he wins big, I'll be a believer.

Definitely for smart
There's no way to argue against Smart being the best right now, but I honestly wouldn't trade Heupel for him.

Dethroning defending champions & rivals is the most fun part of being a fan, IMO. Beating Bama in 2022 was more fun than beating them from 1993 to 2006. Beating Florida in 2016 was more fun than beating them in 2022 & 2024. The next win over Georgia will be just as sweet.

Maybe I just love being the underdog, but I wouldn't trade Heupel for anyone. Next on my list would be Dan Lanning.

NOPE! Wouldn't trade him for anybody. I love the culture he appears to be developing, love his background. Had to work his ass off going the junior college route, then led his college team to a National Championship as a cerebral, hard-nosed QB. Hope he's at UT at least another 10 years.

Smart is obvious. He’s a great coach and probably a pretty likeable guy outside of the obvious. The only other one I would consider would be Lanning because he snitched on Big Nick. I would rather lose than have Day/Dabo or a Brian Kelly type. We’re very lucky to have Heup.!

Kirby was finally able to get UGA over the hump, twice. Sark has been able to do what a couple of thought-to-be-good coaches couldn't do before him, which is make them a good program again. As for Day, yes, whoever the coach at Ohio St is should be able to have a lot of success. Basically all the coaches before him have been really successful. He's still lost only 10 games in 6+ seasons and has national title. That's really good, even at a job where they seem to win no matter who the coach is.

Kirby wouldn't win big at UK because nobody wins big at UK. They don't have the institutional support to win national titles in football there. Bear Bryant would not be Bear Bryant if he stayed at UK or A&M either. I don't think Saban would have won 6 national titles if he stayed at Michigan St. That's why I've always thought that, as highly thought of as he is, you can make an argument that Bobby Bowden is actually underrated. Not only did he win a ton of games at a super consistent clip, including 2 titles, but he built FSU from nothing.

College football isn't the NFL - it is, and always has been, more about recruiting than on-field coaching.

Obviously the only two answers are Kirby and Smart. His recruiting has went from ok the first year, all the way up to the top class, and then to nothing less than a top 4 class every year.

I'd say Kiffin, but only IF the guy who used to smack Big John in Jikesonville is allowed to pimp-slap Kiffy before every home game.

NO! I would not trade for anyone, including Smart. I still remember how great he wasn't before he got a stable full of 5*. I would love to see what CJH could do with the number of 5* players Kirby has.

This is actually a very good point. What would Heup do with that amount of talent and depth at every position? I think we would be scary good.

Something seems wrong about trading coaches with a rival. Hate makes college football great. I might confess under torture that some Vol players are objectively better than some of my dawgs, but who said anything about objectivity?

That said, anybody saying that Smart isn’t that great as a coach because he has had success with buckets of talent needs to listen to Smart talk about his job. He repeatedly emphasizes that job number 1 for him is recruiting. To him, coaching is ‘crootin.

In these times, I believe that CJH will build recruiting momentum with the continuing success of the program, even though his reach must extend to states outside of Tennessee. I think that his staff are coping well with the current environment. GBO!
