My dad and I have talked about this a lot over the years. I think there is a lot of truth to the consensus we have come to that a lot of athletes who reach that level have generally had their messes cleaned up for them all their lives, or at least once they get to the high school level. Some star athletes get deferential treatment. It's just a fact. Why can these athletes not control themselves? Is there no leadership? Does no one warn them of the sacrifices ($$$) they make by responding or, allowing people to set them up?
Kids learn from their parents. If kid sees parent on phone or hears them say something, Kid learns whatever was said or done. The parents are the teachers and unfortunately we have a lot of subpar parents. Read the book, Stolen Focus. Tells you everything that needs to be known. If a child is given devices too early there is lifelong damage done (gray and pink matter) that corresponds to a child's ability to learn, comprehend and patience. If given devices too early these things can not be corrected. Hence, look at society. We learned, before we had kids, the dangers of electronic devices. Our kids are the "weird" kids who have no idea about any of the aforementioned device issues. Social media is not social and the games are not what was played in decades past. Hope this helps someone understand where we are as a society. Why can these athletes not control themselves? Is there no leadership? Does no one warn them of the sacrifices ($$$) they make by responding or, allowing people to set them up?
Unfortunately no for a lot of them ... imagine being a star since you were 14-15, everyone in school college doing whatever you want .. then the money pours in .. only a few can handle it well .. many football athletes come from poor, broken homes ..Why can these athletes not control themselves? Is there no leadership? Does no one warn them of the sacrifices ($$$) they make by responding or, allowing people to set them up?
"If a boy doesn't have a father in the home, he'll find one on the streets". -- Denzel WashingtonThere is no substitute for discipline/time/example given by parents (otherwise known as love) during the early lives of these kids. If it is not present, kids fill in the void with immature, dangerous, and costly decisions at the exact wrong time.
CJH covered the importance of character as well as athletic ability in the targeting process. Not all Eagle Scouts, but Dang few character issues since his arrival. Makes me proud he emphasizes a players need to be a good teammate, especially in his position room. Even his failures have been marginal. The answer... The BREAKDOWN of the family unit in the USA! Lack of discipline and positive male role models in the household. Numbers don't lie.
