Here's the video for those who may not have seen it.

I know it's always filled with coach speak, and I wasn't even all that excited to watch it. That said... a few observations.

- First, I don't like when coaches in year five are talking about how bad the program was when they took over. Love Heupel, but we're beyond the Pruitt years at this point, in my mind.

- The accomplishments have been there. As Heupel noted, amassing 30 wins over three seasons for the first time since the 1990s. And while in today's era of college football it's all about wins and losses, I'm happy with what the program has done with community work and GPA

Stats of note:
- Top 10 last year in six defensive categories. Lead the conference in TFL since they arrived on campus.
- Two SEC Players of the year in the last three seasons.
- (I like this one a lot). Led the SEC in rushing the last two years. Rushed for 2500 yards in each year in all for seasons he's been here -- never been done in Tennessee's history.
- 20-1 at home over the last three seasons.

- Heupel said we will have a three-way competition at quarterback and he's proud of the steps those guys have taken over the summer.

- "Our young guys don't have time to be young."

Eh. Don’t put too much weight into Heup talking about the situation he walked into.

Part of that is just boosting the players, coaches, administration, & university. A lot of it is just him saying screw Nico.

Most of it is him saying…we just went to the playoffs in a year where our QB was halfway out the door and our previous recruiting was with one hand tied behind our back.

Look out. Because that big orange is coming.

Speaking of "our young guys don't have time to be young", I saw a quote from Georgia's coach that more than half of their roster is first or second year players this year. Ran a quick search and almost every top team in the league is in a similar spot. I'm hopeful this will be a fun season! Lots of unknowns for the Vols on offense but other teams have new players and unknowns too.

I think this is the product of NIL and the ability to transfer. We do need stability in this whole system, but the growing parity and some element of randomness is going to make things interesting to watch.

I didn't warm up to CJH till Season 2023...and NOW...I'm CONVINCED that he was the PERFECT Hire 5 years ago..to "right the Ship".

Now...is he capable of coaching up players to BEAT higher ranked Players (Tennessee will NOT recruit Top 5 Classes UNTIL a Natty is Won!) and win SEC/National Championships??!!

Jury is STILL Out!

Yea, I can see 5-6 teams in the SEC this season with a 6-2 conference record. It will be interesting to see who the committee chooses to play in the SEC Championship Game. Should be a really fun season. With the exception of QB, I think this is the most talented roster Heup has had at UT, especially when you to take into account depth.

Yea UGA is very young this year. I have 2 players that I coached who will be true freshmen this year (Gibson & Dinkins)I talked to Dinkins dad last week to see how he is doing up there, thinking he might redshirt or be strictly special teams. His dad told me that Kirby says he will be on the field early and often because he is more physical then some of the guys that's been in his secondary.

Eh I don’t think the stuff about year 5 matters too much. Heupel has his script for this sort of stuff and he don’t change it. Is it maybe getting a tad stale? Sure.

But what kids like about him is how real no bs he is with them. These kids legitimately love their head coach. We got a good one. Lets keep it going.

CJH said exactly what I expected him to say. I did like the way he handled the Nico elephant in the room question. I am excited to see if the offense is better with a new person leading. Sometimes the distractions a person brings outweigh the benefits of them being on the team. JMHO I am so ready for football.

A couple responses to your responses:

“First, I don't like when coaches in year five are talking about how bad the program was when they took over. Love Heupel, but we're beyond the Pruitt years at this point, in my mind.”

This is really the first year where everything is his, so this is the last year I won’t agree with you :)

“- The accomplishments have been there. As Heupel noted, amassing 30 wins over three seasons for the first time since the 1990s.”

I think that what Heuepel has done is more impressive than what is historically referenced with consideration to how much more competitive the SEC is than it was back then.

Jury is always out concerning head football coaches, regardless where they coach; well, maybe not at Kentucky.

If you use the 247 Roster Rankings we were 3-2 against teams with more talent (on paper) and 7-1 against teams with less talent…that was last year.

The team went to the playoffs last year. He can say whatever he wants as long as the team is winning games.

If he starts losing, things will change quickly in Knoxville.

I probably watched every Jeremy Pruitt press conference while he was here but I have only seen a handful of Heupel's and it was early on. I don't know if that illustrates the level of trust I have that we are in good hands or it's just due to the fact that Heupel hardly ever breaks any news. He's definitely a lot duller to listen to but obviously that is irrelevant to winning football games.
