Scouting report on the ,"Cuse". Not very optimistic

They went 9-3 last year and beat Miami. We have a brand new QB (so do they). They won’t roll over. Take Syracuse and the points in the first half. We finish the game strong.

Syracuse, like many other mid-tier Power 4 programs (looking at you, Pitt and Iowa and Texas Tech and Oklahoma State and West Virginia), can make some noise from time to time. They can have a good year. Once in a while, they get a special player (Jim Brown, Donovan McNabb) who bumps them into the upper tier as long as he's on campus. But short of That Guy on the roster, they're not gonna string multiple good years together into anything approaching a championship run. This is not gonna be another 10-win season for them. And it will start with an L.

I don't wanna overlook the Orangemen. But I don't wanna falsely inflate their risk, either. This should be a comfortable game for the lads wearing the RIGHT color orange, safely in hand by halftime or shortly after, and perhaps a 2 to 3 touchdown difference by the end.

Go Vols!

Our "easy schedule" is definitely dependent on beating Syracuse handily.

And I would predict that we will, but I wouldn't be shocked if we don't. The offense might need some time to gel with so many new starters. I do not think Syracuse will be able to score more than 20. But we could end up in a low scoring rock fight.

I do not ever recall press saying a team's veteran talent will have a negative impact.
I suspect they are better than that analysis. They are a middle of the road team. Neither more or less. They won't win a lot of games, but may be a tough out.

Syracuse has a worse QB situation than we do. I think they put up a fight, but we pull away late to win by 17. Our defense probably gets a few turnovers late as well that kills them.
Far worse QB situation. They have 1 total start from their 2 QBs. Joey has at least started 20+ games and thrown for almost 7k yards and 50+ TDs.

David Reese, 8th year Senior. A transfer linebacker from Cal whose first college football season was the Fall of 2018.

The Athletic named Reese to its All-Geezer team, explaining how he got here like this:

"Reese spent his first five years at Florida, where he managed to go four seasons without using any eligibility because of a freshman redshirt (2018), medical redshirts (2019 and 2021) and the free COVID-19 year (2020). Then, in the fifth season, he notched two tackles. He finally made his mark with 11 sacks in two seasons at Cal, then made what might be an unprecedented 2,800-mile transfer within the same conference."

ESPN college football analyst Cole Cubelic was on the SEC Network on Tuesday during SEC Media Days, and the team of analysts on the broadcast were discussing Tennessee and their 2025 schedule. Cubelic preached caution about the opener for the Vols.

"Be careful," Cubelic said. "Be very careful. Steve Angeli, the quarterback at Notre Dame who came in the playoffs last year and looked exception in the Orange Bowl, is going to be the starting quarterback for the Orange, and he is a ballplayer. And that's a coach that just sat right there with Kirby Smart for a couple of years on his staff, Fran Brown, that knows how to get his young men ready to play."

Not sure how much it matters on the field, but Syracuse's Fran Brown coaches with a chip on his shoulder. I think they will put up a bigger fight than people think.
Yeah, I’m not scared of Cuse, but I think our fans are just assuming this is your typical awful Cuse team that will just roll over to anybody with a pulse. I’m not so sure about that. Fran Brown seems to have completely shifted the culture up there, and he looks like he’s a hell of a coach in his own right. But I think the big question is: how much of their success last year was McCord, and how much of it was Brown? I’m of the mind it was both, but who knows.

I think we win for sure, probably by 10+, but the first half is probably going to be pretty close imo. Feels to me like a game that we pull away from late.

That's a matter of opinion. Angeli looked pretty good in limited opportunities at ND. Had an impressive drive against Penn State with under 2 minutes to halftime.

I suspect it'll be a 23-17, 24-20 type of game.

Fran Brown, in year 1, took a 6 win team, and turned them into a 10 win team overnight. As much of a loss as McCord may seem to be, he wasn't viewed anywhere near as highly when he transferred in. He was rejected at Ohio State, but then averaged 360+ yards passing per game at Syracuse. I wouldn't overlook that staff and their ability to put together a good team. It will be a much tougher matchup than many on here seem to expect.

Not the "Orangemen" anymore, just the "Orange".

They have a guy at linebacker who is in his 8th year of college football. 8 years. Unbelievable

Does his walker come with those split tennis balls on it...just askin'

Angeli gives a little concern at QB. Coming from ND and being in a big time program for a year or so, he likely learned a few things about the college game and Syracuse my just be the place for him to show out...don't overlook him.
Fran Brown comes from the Kirby / Saban tree and I can't think of a coach that has come from that tree that couldn't coach...that said, if it comes to a coaching decision / game management type game, I like our guy better, but make no mistake Brown can coach and will have his guys ready.
