I don't want to sound critical, but this looks like a pretty big step down from Sneed. Can't imagine dumping the Vols for the Tarheel$.

This situation is one to keep a close eye on. If the presumed flip of Carson Sneed happens, it will leave the Vols in search of a 2026 tight end. There was previous interest between Watkins and Tennessee so this relationship isn’t starting from the ground level.

Kentucky is going to have to battle to hang onto the playmaker who put up 39 receptions into 668 yards with another 39 rushes for 245 yards and 17 total touchdowns as a junior.

Yep, been here multiple times and was likely waiting on the offer. I'd bet he is in town for at least one home game in September and would also bet on a flip.

“It was definitely a cool feeling getting that offer,” Watkins said. “That has been my school since I was a little guy so it felt good making younger me proud.”

The timing of the offer is definitely interesting as reports fly that current Tennessee four-star tight end commit Carson Sneed is on the verge of flipping to North Carolina.

Tennessee does want Watkins to visit the school this fall for a game day visit. They haven’t hammered out details yet but it’s a possibility. Watkins has visited Tennessee before and came away impressed.

“It’s just a beautiful area,” Watkins said.

“And it is about as close to hometown football as it gets at the college level. Rocky Top is special.”

One of the things that Watkins does like about Tennessee’s program is coach Josh Heupel’s offense.

“I love what he does honestly,” Watkins said.

“He doesn’t really follow the guidelines or what Tennessee offense would be presumed to be. He gears it towards the studs and runs with that. I know this year they are going into some heavy 12P so that will be interesting.”

well good thing we have Brame, Davis, Van Dorselaer and Cole Harrison already in that room.

all of these guys the coaches love.
Harrison has stayed injured.
And Davis could leave after this year if he absolutely blows up. Stranger things have happened.

They have 7 spots left for 2026. Some of those may be for Transfer portal acquisitions.

In terms of rankings, it is a drop. There are a few things that mitigate the ranking differences though. From what I can find about him, he is athletic and has good burst. Steady hands and a willing blocker. Good size for a 17 yo kid going into his SR season. Luckily, we have some depth at TE right now with a couple FR who appear to be dynamic. Do I want Sneed? Absolutely. Do I want another potential Nico or Boo situation that could cause distraction? No way. If Sneed wants to go to UNC and play ball with his brother, I get it. My biggest question is I just can't figure out why he hasn't just flipped to UNC already. What is he gaining from the way things sound right now?

It'll be more than that after some of our guys leave for the portal in December. Bottom line, I don't think this staff is worried at all about numbers with the scholarship increase.

He wants to play with his brother. Sneed can’t leave quick enough imo. Give me a guy who really wants to be here instead of a hug who commits and then says how great other schools are.

Could it be that Sneed doesn't want to go to UNC, but he's torn because of his brother being there. I would think if he really wanted to go to UNC, he has had plenty of time to have done it by now. I know Rivals has him flipping, but it's getting pretty late to be flipping now. I for 1, hope he stays.

He's as good as gone at this point.
