Is Josh Heupel lucky?

Hello Volnation its August again and time to come out of hibernation.

I am a big fan of Josh Heupel, any man who has won 30 games in three years get my support. Try to remember the pre Heupel days when the last time Tennessee beat Alabama or Florida the players wore leather helmets; when the Vols went 0-6 in SEC play and when Kentucky and Vanderbilt had winning streaks against the boys in Orange. Yes, I am a big fan, but I am asking the question is he also lucky?

Napoleon once said when being offered a new general “I know he’s good but is he lucky?” it seems Napoleon knew the importance of being lucky.

Lucky No 1
If it wasn’t for the appointment by Tennessee of Heupel’s AD at UCF Danny White, I think feathersax probably had a better chance of the getting the job at Knoxville. As they say ‘right place right time’.

Lucky No 2
Josh personally recruited Joe Milton whilst he inherited Hendon Hooker and Josh anointed Milton as QB1. If Milton had not got hurt, I am sure Hooker would never have had the chance to cement his name in Tennessee folklore. Definitely ‘by accident than design’

Lucky No 3
Josh put all his chips on 32 Red or more accurately Nico Iamaleava (this is the last time I call him Nico, he is no friend or member of the Vol family). But by strange fate he swapped a 3 star journeyman for a 5 star Heisman candidate and I think he will have won again, here is why:

American Football loves a good measurement, how fast can he run? how high can he jump? how big is the Quarterbacks hands? How long is the Offensive Tackles arms?. But there is one thing that there is no method on how to measure and that is if he is A Gamer.

I have watched quite a bit of tape of Joey Aguilar and here are my observations. Firstly, you will notice this season that even when the ‘heat is coming’ this guy doesn’t lower his eyes, he keeps focused on the route regardless of the impending punishment coming (no running out of bounds on the last play by this guy). Secondly, he throws what I bizarrely call ‘catchable balls’, the TEs and Slot Receivers are going to love this guy. Thirdly, his arm strength is good enough for the deep ball which is such a staple of the Huepel offense. Fourthly, people will highlight the number of INTs he threw at App State but when you go back to the tape this guy was often 14 points down in the 1st Quarter and regularly put the team on his back and took many chances for the good of the team. I believe JA will win a least one game this season on his own.

If I can come back to arm strength, remember the five last quarterbacks are Dobbs, Hooker, Milton, Iamaleava and Aguilar, now Milton and Iamaleava had by far the strongest arms, but that really means nothing when throwing from the deck of a ship in the ocean, they would rarely hit water. Yes Dobbs, Hooker and now I believe Aguilar were and are the most successful of the five because I believe they were and are Gamers.

I know it s the time of year where everybody wallows in optimism, but I really think we, by accident or design, have the better quarterback than UCLA and this season is going to be a pleasant surprise.

You are correct in many have forgotten the years before Heupel's hiring and for any perceived issues or shortcomings he has, he has been a massive positive to the program and the university as a whole.

As for his luck, the injury to Hooker was enough bad luck for a few years. Even with a loss at SCAR, we still had a shot at the CFP. Then the crazy lack of penalties by opponents on the road a couple years ago was absurdly unlucky.

And now for something completely different, do you have any restaurant recommendations near the Kings Cross Station? About to board a flight to Heathrow and have one night there in London before catching a train.

Might of gotten kind of lucky on the offense by getting Henson hooker but still, Heupel used the hurry up and spread that helped unleash Jaylin Hyatt on Alabama. Also, without having a good offense we made the playoffs this year with the players he recruited.

Always enjoy your posts. This seems like a 2 in 1 post. Yes, I think Heupel has lucked out quite a bit.

I'm not sure how Heupel landed the UCF job, so not sure if it was quite luck, but didn't hurt at all he inherited what Frost built to bolster his debut in the HC ranks. On the flip side, look at what he walked into at Tennessee. That also isn't necessarily bad luck. He made that decision.

Also, there's double luck with Hooker. He was lucky to have Hooker on the roster. No one else on that roster could play like that kid played.

As far as Aguilar goes, that's along the same logic as the first two points which are more about decisions than luck. I think if luck has it, then it's because Heupel didn't have to look for long or far to replace Nico. But that's only going to be any sort of luck if Aguilar lives up to your billing.

I haven't watched much of him and am about to, but from what I have seen, the kid definitely has the Moxy that Hooker had and that was missing from both Milton and Nico among others. You made some good points in his defense. We will see... but one thing is for sure. If our OL doesn't take a step forward, it will be a long season for him or whoever starts. I'm liking what I read about our OL and DL in the practice notes.

UPDATE: Just watched this and this guy breaks it down pretty well.

I think I know what you’re saying but teams and coaches create their own luck too. He’s a really good football coach. There have been many moments since he’s been here where the Vols would have beaten themselves over the past decade or so but they made the play instead. They’re not quite elite yet but it’s no longer embarrassing to be a Vols fan IMO.

Funny, right before reading this post by London Vol, I mentioned that I was craving Fish and Chips. The problem I have is that my nearest restaurant with the dish charges $28 and I refuse to pay that much. 30A tourist prices ugh. Anyway, I loved the post so much I gave in..

Thank you for all the kind words above, it is appreciated.

I have had a better year so far after all the operations regarding my shock cancer diagnosis in 2024. But sadly with this on my CV foreign travel is out due to the increase in Travel Insurance, so no trips to Knoxville I am afraid.

Oh I do think JH is doing great a great job, all I was trying to highlight was at certain moments luck is most helpful.

Regarding the O Line, I think Heard and Sanders are the best pair of tackles we have had for sometime, It did strike me how toned their bodies were, no flab visible from last year and it was no surprise to read that there will be less of "head down and up the middle" from the RBs and more attacking the edges.

Sorry not sure of pubs in the Kings Cross area, but please be careful because our wonderful city is plagued right now with crime especially phone theft, so please be safe and have a great time. Big Ben is my most favorite landmark you must tell me what you thought , but of course I would say that.

On the subject of luck-

My uncle, and probably others: “I’d rather be lucky than good.”

Gene Simmons: “The harder I work, the luckier I get.”

Finally, the one play that REALLY stands out to me from the ‘98 season, the stumble and fumble. No matter how you look at it, that was a lucky play!

Thank you for answering the personal questions that were on all our minds about how you've been doing. Stay strong and resolute!

As for the health of England... I'm afraid y'all are gonna have to take the lead and lead your leaders out the gate! I don't know what's behind their policies, but it certainly is not to add another century to Britain's unique history.

Just tonight I was watching Powell & Pressburger's 1944 WW2 film, "A Canterbury Tale." Brilliant movie, and a gut reminder of why England needed (and still needs) to prevail against foreign powers, and continue to thrive among the nations. I was thinking as I was watching, "I wish every born citizen of England could be forced to watch this movie, to be reminded of their rich, rich heritage."

Stay strong and resolute in that regard, also.

I like to think of it as The building is still wonderful its just that the current tenants are a nightmare, but in time they will move on or move out and then the building can return to its beauty.

Think after Neyland, Majors and Fulmer, Dooley, Jones and Pruitt squatted but now we have Heupel:)

Tally-ho, @London Vol . With all the N.I.L./transfer portal/lawsuits, etc. I've become jaded, pouty & pessimistic about the direction of college football. You, however, re-awaken my Volunteer spirit. Your observations about CJH being both "lucky & GOOD" are spot on. 😎
