15. CB Eric Berry — 2007

High School: Creekside (Ga.)
Rivals Ranking: No. 3 NATL.
College: Tennessee
NFL Draft Selection:
No. 5 (2010)

Berry starred at both quarterback and defensive back for Creekside, leading his team to a 37-5 record while earning Army All-American honors as a senior. He ultimately chose Tennessee over offers from nearly every major program in the country and finished as two-time unanimous All-American, was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year twice, and also took home the 2009 Jim Thorpe Award. After his college career was over, he played nine seasons in the NFL — all for the Kansas City Chiefs — and was a five-time Pro Bowler and the league’s Comeback Player of the Year in 2015 after a battle with cancer.

He was incredible. He'd been a lock for the Hall of Fame if not for cancer.

Cancer and injuries. If it were just the cancer, he’d be in. But he missed a couple other years due to injury and ultimately had his career ended by an Achilles. He is the best Vol this century, and it isn’t all that close.

Jeremiah Smith has my vote for #1. I could make a case for Travis Hunter. Cam Newton surely deserves to be among the top 5. Those people undeniably added some wins to their programs.

Florida, USC, and Bama should have won even without Tebow, Bush, or whoever you choose from Bama.

Anyone remember Maurice Clarette?

Absolutely deserving. One of the best we'll ever see signed at UT. And I have seen a lot of great players at Tennessee - a whole lot of them. But watching games with Berry out there was something else. I've never experienced such a clear sensation of "the game completely changes while they're on the field" as I did with Berry. You could just tell that all of a sudden, giant swaths of the secondary were completely closed for business. Even describing it feels off too me, like the words are inadequate to the sensation. You could smell fear on the other team's offensive staff and coaches. Do. Not. Throw. Near. Eric. Berry. Just the wildest damn thing.

It's not even close. Just college career, Derek Barnett is in the stratosphere, but nobody truly comes near him.

Bro. Derek isn't in the same universe as Eric Berry. Get your head outta the stat sheet. Barnett looked good on paper but in terms of the eye test he was not even as impressive as Dobbs during that time period.

Eric Berry is the greatest college defensive back I've ever seen. He is in his own stratosphere. Especially in comparison to someone like Barnett.

I watched every game of both. Berry is clearly, by far the best player of the century to don Orange. Barnett, definitely not Berry (which I clearly stated) does deserve a shoutout. You're relying too much on his NFL career which was disappointing. Barnett was an absolute monster with basically zero help on the D-Line his entire three year run.
