Dooley tried to lose to Kentucky?

My apologies about not blurring out the F word. I don't use any language and usually blur that out. Guess I was in a hurry to share and forgot haha

I’ve been told by someone who covered Tennessee back then that Dooley tried to quit after that game and Hart talked him out of it. If true, tanking that game makes sense. It was inexcusable to lose that game.

And also if true, Hart should’ve let him quit. We had a ton of offensive talent returning and could have used it to entice a good coach. It was obvious after 2 years that DD wasn’t going to get it done.

Imagine if Tennessee had hired Hugh Freeze (that was the year Ole Miss hired him) that year instead of another year with Dooley followed by Butch.

in post game interview, one of the older TEs blasted young players saying its all about them .. then the rumors came about 'not wanting to go to crappy bowl game' .. combine that with Rogers' volatile history and it makes me seem like he is attention seeking

“Tried to lose” is too strong. At some point, Dooley went and asked to be bought out and the team may have checked out on him.

I know the athletic budget at the time was a disaster, and Hart was still breaking in. But it's unbelievable this happened and (at the time) a P5 AD was like "no man, we need you here, can you stay please?" Just tells you how awful the leadership was at the time.

I thought this was the game that Da’rick and Tyler Bray basically tanked it cause they didn’t want to go to a crappy bowl.
Wasn’t that the season where Bray broke his thumb playing Georgia? Was he back for the Kentucky game? My brain has shut down most of those nightmare seasons. But not all of them. I do recall Kentucky starting a wide receiver at QB.

No way that happened. Bray was laying it on the line, trying to run for first downs in that game. The coaches were already trying to find their next landing spot, the coaches checked out.

Yep it was the 2011 season that Bray broke his thumb. He was back for the Kentucky game. Yea they beat us with a converted WR playing QB so embarrassing and ended our 27 game win streak against them.

I remember the offense was dreadful that game. However, they got inside the Kentucky 10 yard line in either the third or fourth quarter and went to the awful G-Gun formation with Gerald Jones at quarterback, which ended in a fumble. That ultimately cost them the game

That was 2008 Auburn right? Jones was gone after 2010

Correction: It was 2011 Kentucky, but Neal lined up at the QB and the snap went over his head on a timing issue.

The more I read about Hart's tenure, the more it feels like he was a Bama plant sent to ruin us even further. Either that or I need to take my conspiracy theory hat off 😂

If we had hire Freeze after Kiffin, then, we would probably still be on probation.

That's the game we we lost while the KY qb was actually a receiver, correct? All I remember was being pissed off. Apparently, I went outside and raked all the leaves in a fit of anger after that game. Don't remember doing it, but I did a pretty darn good job.

Yeah. Maybe should be re-phrased to "didnt care one way or another if we lost". I do believe it happened right before this game though on what is alleged. No business losing to that UK team with a WR playing QB and theres really no other way to explain than the above. We've beaten far better UK teams with probably worse Tennesse teams than what was on the field that year.

That is correct. Georgia State is the most embarrassing loss, but the Kentucky loss is the one I remember being the most mad about it.

Imagine if we would have hired a young Johnny Majors in 1970 instead of Bill Battle.

It wouldn’t surprise me. Anyone who knows anything about how Dooley conducted himself as HC at UT beyond the comical quips at press conferences and looking like a fool on a stool knows he is actually a tremendous àsshole, and that’s the most charitable way to describe him.

Makes him par for the course as a public servant, glad he's running for office.
