Would Coach Heupel start a true freshman QB ?

George Maclntyre is trending up . A lot of unknowns here beig a true freshman .
( positives ) probably the best athlete of the three , as good or better arm as the other two , definitely the highest ceiling of the three . He comes from a football family , so the pedigree is there .
( negatives ) he is bone thin and needs to gain about 25 pounds and he has no experience at the college level .
Three weeks from today , can't get here fast enough.

Highly, highly unlikely that a guy can go 2-10 in high school as a junior and then give a SEC team the best chance to win as a true freshman.

QB is a great debate for the Vols at this point in time. CJH and staff have recruited 2 highly rated QBs already on the roster and another committed to sign this Winter. I doubt this much highly rated talent has been here before, including Colquitt, Helton, Manning, and Stewart. Although all positions are important the QB has the ball almost every snap and today’s game with RPOs require them to read the defense immediately upon the snap. Passing is only part of the game. Last year the offense was almost evenly split with 50% run and 50% pass. Yard per game was almost even running yds vs passing yds. And yet, the Vols QB was mid pack with stats, and the team was 10-2 beating Fl and Ala and made the playoffs.

I don’t think he has gone up against the first team defense much if at all. I think you have to give him a chance against the 1’s. Sounds like Merk just doesn’t have it.

With my comments above I want to say that a QB that can be a team leader and make the correct reads, is the QB that fans should want. I think all the current contenders are pretty good, but Gmac has shown leadership from the day he committed. In HS his leadership was what teammates bragged about. He may not start this year, but currently weighing 205 lbs will not be why he doesn’t play this year. Many RBs weigh 200# and get hit most every play, WRs weight 200# and play, DBs weigh 200# so weight won’t be the deciding factor. As a true FR Manning played basically the last 6 games and looked very skinny.

Yes, if he’s mentally and physically ready and gives us the best shot at winning…MacIntyre may not be physically ready for SEC play. But I trust the coaches to make those calls.

I would of started Nico in 23 over Milton , we imo would of had a similar record and Njco would of had a full year of experience going into 24 . Same situation here with G-Mac . Ultimately it's up to the coaches , I'm just giving my 2 cents

What makes it possible is that none of the 3 have game experience for the Vol offense. It's unlikely. But anything is possible. Apparently, GMac's arm strength has caught the eyes of many. But CJH wants the one who can best manage the team and keep the offense out of negative plays and TOs. It's anyone's guess at this point.

The one deciding factor is what it all comes down to: How do they perform when the lights come on against live competition, esp sec competition? You never know how things shake out, but his chance may come earlier than expected. The QB who starts the first game may not be the starter the 2nd game and subsequent games. With only 3 weeks until live action begins, the best choice may not be settled on until after the season commences.

Joey Aguilar is the needed QB to start. He has the most experience and can run as well. Real games are different than practice as we have learned in the past. If our OLine can hold for him he can throw for over 3000 yards. We will see I guess. Dang I wish the season was next week lol.
