Article from Patrick Brown. How does one go from being a DB in HS to a 6'3, 313 DL?

DL Jamal Wallace

The second-year junior college transfer, a former high school wide receiver and defensive back who redshirted during the 2024 season, looked far from being a factor back in the spring when he was sidelined by injury, but Wallace along with Ethan Utley has forged himself into the mix at defensive tackle. The 6-foot-3, 313-pound Wallace

Means he is a heck of an athlete. He was 280 when he got to Duke. A lot of athletes go through various positions through hs careers as their body develops during HS and their coaches are trying to get their best 11 athletes on the field.

He never went to Duke. He came to us straight from JuCo.

He was/is an outstanding athlete. I’ve seen him listed as 6’3”, 6’4”, and 6’5” - pretty big frame regardless of which is correct. Plenty of good athletes play skill positions in HS but bulk up and move toward the trenches in college. Eason was a 250 pound LB and is now a 315 pound DT…I couldn’t find Wallace’s weight coming out of high school so I don’t know how much mass he has added - maybe more than Eason but probably in that range.
Interestingly, these guys can re- transform their bodies after football. Former OL Alan Faneca dropped over 100 pounds after retiring from the NFL and ran marathons for a while…under 4 hours!

Back in the late 60's and early 70's, I played basketball for a small school in Arkansas. One of my teammates was about 6'2" and 180. He was also the starting QB on our football team. I was a senior and he was a junior.

I enlisted in the military, 4-year commitment, and at the end of my 4 years, I returned to Memphis. About a year later, I saw my teammates name called in the NFL draft. He was now 6'4" and a little over 300 pounds. He changed positions in college and became a center. Long story short----steroids.

Turns out he was just a really good athlete and would do anything to make it to the NFL. Not gonna say what team drafted him or what college he attended after high school, or his name, but the answer was steroids back in the day to put on massive weight over a few years.

Looks like he was 6 5 225 his Sr year in HS played WR/OLB at Ruskin HS

His Jr Year in HS he only weighed 205 and played SS and WR

When he got to Juco looks like he moved to EDGE and was around 250ish but looks like he gained some more weight there too.

He should be a very fast DL. Fulmer used to sign a lot of DB's and grow them into linebackers. They were still on the smaller side but made up for it with speed and quickness. One of my favs was Raynoch Thompson. I think he was listed at 212 his senior year. He could move and deliver a blow. I remember all the jawja folks complaining that he was beating up their players...and he was.
