I was a sophomore and it was my first bowl game. Everyone that was there or watched on TV remembers, "The Tackle," when Paul Naumoff absolutely jacked 250 pound Larry Csonka on the goalline. Ranks right up there with the 59 , "Stop," in the LSU game and Bill Duff stuffing Larry George in the 96 Citrus Bowl. But this was the best pure 1 on 1 tackle I have ever seen. Im sure there are videos somewhere.

Still the 2 best rbs, Floyd Little and Csonka, I have ever seen in the same backfield. Great memories. Still wonder what Tom Fisher would have accomplished if not killed in the wreck right before spring practice.

"In 1966, Naumoff moved to linebacker after one of the team's starting linebackers, Tom Fisher, died in an automobile accident.[5] He helped lead the 1966 Tennessee team to an 8-3 record. He was awarded the game ball after the 1966 Gator Bowl. Naumoff made a "jolting tackle" of Larry Csonka late in the game to preserve Tennessee's 18-12 victory over Syracuse."

I watched it on TV and remember that tackle, the Syracuse ground game (close to 350 yards rushing) and us scoring a touchdown on a fake field goal. But the thing that I remember most vividly was a member of the Vols track team (can't remember his name) jumping out of the stands and taking a Syracuse flag from one of the Syracuse cheerleaders or boosters who was running around the edge of the field in front of the Tennessee fans.

Franco Harris and Lydell Mitchell was pretty good as well.

It was quite a hit, but Syracuse eventually scored on the possession. Still, it was late in the game and Syracuse was forced to run that one more extra play, which ran more time off the clock to help Tennessee get the win.

I was in attendance on that beautiful day in Jacksonville and that Neumhoff hit on Conzka is still one of my favorite all time Vol moments. Although we had no reason to suspect it that afternoon, we did have the rare treat to witness two future pro hall of famers in the same opposing backfield and we stopped them! A few years later I was able to further appreciate Floyd Little’s incredible talents in Denver! Takes me back a few years! Ah, those were good years too!

My dad did. He said that Csonka got knocked out on that play. The replay didn't show him get knocked out (at least immediately). Did Csonka go back in the game after that?

I don't think so. I was actually sitting in that end zone on about the 5th row so it was right in front of us. He possibly could have gone over to the sideline and collapsed but I dont remember anything about that.

The thing I remember the most was the sound which was like a gunshot.

Yes, there was actually a facemask foul on that 1st down play and the next play Csonka lead Little into the endzone. The game then ended with UT with the ball. At 2:40:00 in for those of you that watch the full game on Utube

The flag incident I referenced above is at ~ 1:30:00 of this video.

That’s one of the few vol games that I have seen in person.

ND had Jerome Bettis, Ricky Waters & Rocket Ismail in the backfield in the 1990 game in Neyland. That was another great backfield along with the others mentioned above.
