GAME 1 – Syracuse

Like in boxing you get a long build up to the event, there are lots of anticipation of what is going to happen finally you get a press conference and the weigh-in. Then at last the bell rings and you get to see what is real and what is hype. Yesterday we saw round 1 of 12 (hopefully more than 12 rounds this season), I actually thought Syracuse were competitive and a harder test than Virginia and NC State were, although the picture will become clearer for them in the next few weeks.

As for Tennessee, last night was intriguing because I have not known a new season with so many unanswered questions and then add that to David Sanders, Jermod McCoy and Daevin Hobbs were all not suited up. The bad news did not stop there our already thin Defensive Tackle group lost Jackson Moi for nearly all of the game. The night could have gone south but you needed to stop worrying Josh Heupel was on the case. whilst I think there is plenty of work to do, it was largely a very positive start. So here are my grades and what I believe what we have learned so far:

QUARTERBACKS A-

Through no fault of his own Joey Aguilar has found himself in the glare of the public spotlight, not only in Knoxville but nationally due to the quite grubby affair of ‘daddy’s boy with deep pockets in his pyjamas’. Add in the fact that Aguilar didn’t even have spring training to learn the playbook, he probably exceeded most people’s expectations. His stats of 247 yards 3 TDs and no INTs (note a certain Bruin had 136 yards 1 TD and 1 INT late last night) are very encouraging, but it is the way he keeps his eyes downfield which shows we have in our midst a brave warrior (there will be no running out of bounds on the last play with the game on the line, this season), I said in an article during the summer I thought, after watching his film, he was ‘gamer’ and he reinforced this opinion.

RUNNING BACKS A+
With the Offensive Line, this department was the stars (back to that unit in a minute) 246 yards with 6.2 y.p.c it was a sterling night stacked with impressive individual stats. Star Thomas (he was a revelation, and I think he will actually run for the most yards this season) with 92 yards at 7.7, DeSean Bishop (more tough yards) 82 yards at 7.5 and Peyton Lewis (who ran better that the stats suggest) 38 yards at 4.8.

WIDE RECEIVERS C+
A bit patchy here for me, Mike Matthews continues to not ‘take the reins’ of this department. The bar is set high for him but there were two drops (ok the second one was contested) that a premier receiver just does not make. I’m not giving up on him but with a stunning recruiting class on its way, this is the season to breakout. Braylon Staley was the least spoken about WR during the close season yet he was the best receiver. Chris Brazzell is another I’m not yet sold on. One minute good the next minute not so. If fact the only thing consistent is his inconsistency. I hope Travis Smith Jnr steps up this season and if he does then Brazzell could well land up riding the pine

TIGHT ENDS C-
A rather quiet day for a unit I have high hopes for, apart for the late TD for Miles Kitselman. Ethan Davis wiped out a TD off the scoreboard for a needless low block and had no catches. Must do better

OFFENSIVE LINE A+
Only Lance Heard actually started in the same position on the Offensive Line that was mooted only a few weeks ago, yet they gave up zero sacks and zero Quarterback hurries. In fact they kept Aguilar clean and upright all night, he is going to love this season behind this O Line. It is always important to give some credit to the O Line when Running backs post such gaudy numbers. A big call out to Jesse Perry who had to kick outside despite adding 50 llbs with the plan to be a Guard and yet did his job and also to Sam Pendleton, who apart from one high snap near the end allayed fears that we have a problem at Center.

DEFENSIVE LINE C

This might seem be a harsh grade after holding Syracuse to 103 yards at 2.3 y.p.c but the eye test seemed to say that we were out muscled up the middle (bigger tests to come) and in fact their main running back ran for 4 yards per pop. Without Hobbs and Moi, combined with Eason being banged up for most of the game, it was no surprise that they both struggled and were later gassed. Joshua Josephs was the best End although Ross had a big TFL

LINEBACKERS B

Arion Carter, Edwin Spillman and Jeremiah Telander all had big moments, but I wished they could have taken away some of those underneath and crossing routes that Syracuse were so successful with.

DEFENSIVE BACKS A+
Missing Ricky Gibson most the game, Boo Carter rarely visible and the preseason team MVP Jermod McCoy out, I feared the worst, especially as The Cuse were the No 1 team passing in the country last season, but some of the most encouraging things on the whole evening were found here. Colton Hood was really really impressive, I know his scoop and score was a highlight real moment but I was more impressed with the 3 Breakups added to the fact he was “sticky” all night. There was a lot of hype in the spring regarding Ty Redmond and this was well deserved. If McCoy does go to the Draft in the winter we have a great replacement here already. The good news continues, Edrees Farooq built on promising moments from last season with a very competent performance. Lastly Jalen McMurray often seemed to be around the action including a sack. Coach Martinez has earnt his pay this off season.

BIG MOMENT
Tennessee have predominantly been a running game for a few years now but the fear of the “long ball” by the Vols has often meant the Defenses play two deep safeties, this results in the front 7 becoming a front 6 or even 5 thus running becomes much easier. The book was out that Aguilar dd not have a rocket arm and if the opposition believe this they will start to creep up and “stack the box”. Even though there were a number of big moments the 73 yard bomb to Braylon Staley was the biggest for me. Not only did it reply to Syracuse who had just scored, but it also put on tape that our next 11, 12 or even 13 opponents will need to respect the “long bomb”

Please post our comments and opinions please.

Thanks for another on-point analysis, LV. I got more than little excited watching on t.v. & listening to Mike Keith & the guys on the Vol Network. Along with the veterans, the "new" guys brought enthusiasm & skills to the big victory over Syracuse. 1st-game jitters were there, of course....every other team had drawbacks. Hope all those injuries aren't severe; Rodney Garner's DL seemed to take a bit of a beating (but the young back-ups stepped right up).
As for other teams: Bama got clocked in their opener against Florida St. (laughed out loud at the Tide fans moaning & gasping in Tallahassee); Nico looked terrible in the litte time I watched UCLA get whipped by Utah (of course, he was overthrowing receivers right & left.
Next week a warm-up game against ETSU, then it's those Jawja Dawgs in Neyland Stadium. 😎

Excellent assessment and I pretty much agree with your grades. My one thing with JA is that we gotta see those high throws be lowered. He had roughly 4-5 that I can remember that, had they been lower and more on target, we’d arguably have 2 possibly 3 more TDs or FGs, depending. But it’s also Game 1 and I’m not going to be too picky. Just something I’m hoping is addressed this week.

Yeah I could get picky about a few things and I’m not delusional about much stiffer tests coming, but you can’t win them all unless you win the first one, so I’ll just appreciate the win!

Great recap, I don't disagree with much of what you said. On the grading, I would give the DL higher and the DBs slightly lower. I thought they had great pressure on the QB most of the game, and the DBs had a couple of blown assignments, but nothing to worry about yet. I also agree the inconsistency of the WRs is still the most frustrating thing about this team.

I would also give an A to the coaching staff. It's clear that they worked hard in the offseason following the Nico and Boo drama and had the team focused and ready to play.

My Grades are very similar. Questions entering game were answered by JA and OL and RB group. Great job by all 3. TE Grades mine is B because they also were apart of Dominating LOS. WR MM does need to catch that deep ball he had defended right were he needed him and also few routes were read wrong. I disagree with your statement on Chris B yes one easy drop but played well. Defense up the middle was discouraging but also playing without Moi and Hobbs makes a difference and so getting all those snaps for others were invaluable especially Nate Forced Fumble for TD and Wallace who needs experience and he will get better. Hood was great and McMurray. Once we are healthy with McCoy and Boo shakes rust off we have 5 guys that can cover huge advantage to Our D. Happy Lord's Day everyone. In CHRIST Alone

A bit worried about DL up the middle vs rush by Syracuse. We seemed to get pushed around some. I felt the defense lost containment on the outside at times regarding Syracuse rushing rbs and Syracuse QB roll out runs. Telender is not fast enough (SEC speed) to get to the edge. I liked how our DB's seemed to play with more pressure on WR's of Syracuse but have to play the ball better on throws. Aguilar needs to work on the overthrows to WR's - do not know if that is mechanics or he was just a bit juiced up in first half. I felt we got a bit conservative in third quarter offensively- didn't seem to come out like we did in first quarter and second quarter which was a lot different than how we approached first half last year. Josh seemed to give Joey more flexibility than with Nico. Joey seemed to run the offense like Hooker did in 2022 and I am sure his experience helps with that.

Passing game we have got to get the Freshman receivers involved. I agree with your assessment of Matthews and Brazzell and they both just cannot seem to have a breakout game. Also thought we would have more passes to out Tight Ends this season. Ethan Davis with 0 catches was shocking.

On the positive side-- Star Thomas. How about the catch out of the backfield in the end zone?!!!!

TEs were better than C-. Kitselman made a one-handed catch over the middle at the 5 yard line early in the game that didn’t get the attention it deserved. Likewise, TE blocking played a big part in the running game. Just because they didn’t have big stats doesn’t mean they performed below par. Grade should be B.

#6 did his job and looked like he belonged there. They were able to play fast and he can, avoid sacks and get the ball to the playmakers. No panic in the way he plays. We should be looking for our next QB right now by picking out the best junior on another team that could be looking to move up next season. In this new age of college football this is what you do at the QB position. If one of the freshman pan out then great, buy you need backup as they could both be purchased by other teams.

And the "low block" was a BS call. Noone engaged the DE he just put his hands on the tackle and fell

It's time to STOP with your post game analysis when you give the D

Bs an A+!!!

To explain how I arrived at an A+ for the Secondary is based on how they did as opposed to what I expected.

Go back to noon yesterday we had a secondary of Hood, Redmond, Turrentine, Farooq and McMurray (Gibson for just a few snaps) up against last years No 1 Passing team in the country (granted McCord and the odd receiver was not in Atlanta, but Angeli and Co were still very lively) yet I saw 10 PBUs, some really sticky coverages, the PIs were hard contested plays that could have been overlooked on another day, no busted assignments and no obvious missed tackles. Therefore I could not see what more I could have realistically wished for hence A+.

feathersax, it really cheered me up to hear from you and more importantly you followed and enjoyed the game, welcome home !!

The receivers also dropped 3 passes

Great assessment LV. The only grade I would give different from yours is Linebackers. I would give them a C-. They still look lost to me in coverage situations and sort of "disappear" in the crowd. I was kind of disappointed in that group to be honest. I feel like we gave up way too many pass completions in the short/middle of the field where linebackers are supposed to cover.
