Did anyone notice on the Mike Matthews catch at 1:25 in 2nd quarter that he seems to let up and looked afraid to get hit? After rewatching the play, it seems with a little more effort he could have possibly scored. Weird ending to that play. It was right after the long run by Desean Bishop and the play where the Syracuse defenders went down faking the injury to disrupt our sequence.

There was a lot of traffic around him, looked like he was securing the football. Can’t blame him for that.

Having said that he needs to get a lot better for us to compete.

I rewatched that play. Didn’t see anything resembling an effort issue. Maybe if he cuts outside on the second defender he maybe could have scored. He made a couple defenders look silly though when they were trying to tackle him.

Not saying this is what you are doing, but I think alot of fans are going to be ultra critical of Matthews this season because he flirted with the portal in the offseason. It’s pretty clear the coaching staff is counting on him to have a big year. I am huge fan of his ability. He needs to catch the ball better but you can say that about the entire receiver room.

He went down the stop the clock so they could set up the next play. He wasn't going to waste time fighting for more yardage went the time on clock was more important. It was a smart play when you are in a 2 minute drill. Time is more important than the extra yard.
Yeah, it looked like he realized he had already made the first down yardage and wasn't going to get much more, so he just went down to protect the ball and stop the clock. Smart play, IMO.

To be honest, I was still thinking about how slow Bishop looked being run down from behind by that Syracuse DB on the previous play.

Bishop is Jabari Small 2.0. Good physical back with great vision but no burner speed. Except Bishop still has two good shoulders.

Star and Lewis looked a lot more explosive, but Bishop knows how to get 4-5 yards when you absolutely need it. He also was the best pass blocker of the bunch.

As far as Matthews I don’t think time was a huge concern at that point given how close we were. I think he just didn’t have as secure of a grip on the ball initially and did the smart thing by erring on the side of safety/ball security like you said.

Bishop had 6 there if he had turned towards the middle of the field and let his blocker disrupt that DB.

If it hits both hands and you have gloves which have Lester Hays built in stickum, catch it. If the ball can bounce off both palms it shoulda been caught.
I like what I saw after the one catch. JA needs to be more accurate on some throws to help but on the deep ball slightly underthrown which could have been a PI, he needs to go get the ball. He tried to get handsy and lean for separation and threw off timing and allowed the ball to come down where defender could make a play. Slow down, go up and get it and catch it or 15 yard penalty.

Saw that also. But in my thinking at the time, his forward progress was over and he was stood up, stopped and then here come the rippers from other defenders. Im guessing his thought was to get to the ground with the ball and run another play.

Please elaborate on the things he needs to work on in able for us to compete
He should be flashing against teams with suspect secondaries especially when our qb has all day to throw. He had at least one drop that I can remember. 5star recivers are impossible to cover. He doesn’t appear to be. So specifically to answer your question he needs to work on his route running (get open and create space), his hands (don’t drop passes that hit your hands).

No but I did see him trying to get a celebration in after a 7-8 yard catch early in the game. Like it was something special. Seems like every catch these days requires a look at me dance.

DB’s, especially CB’s are usually the fastest guys on the field. Speed is not necessarily a 215 lb running backs most important skill.
