ESPN RANKINGS

This is why polls are a waste of time offseason and early season. We never should have been ranked 24th by the AP journalism majors who know nothing about our actual roster. We have no reason at this point to be ranked in the top10 for beating handily an unranked Syracuse team. The truth almost certainly lies somewhere in between. We are probably the 12th to 15th best team in the nation right now missing McCoy,maybe Gibson too, our 2 starting Dtackles, etc.

Could everything come together this season perfectly and our injured players get back to 100% soon, and we squeak into the playoffs...yes thats possible. Far more likely IMO that we go 9-3 or maybe even 8-4 if we have injuries/problems and end up on the outside looking in ranked in the low or middle teens. Luckily texas and bama already have 1 loss so unless LSU or UGA runs the table nobody is getting through the SEC schedule unscathed. The parity in the SEC is so much better than the days when Bama steamrolled everybody for a decade. Now that everyone pays players we get much better football. Go VOLS

Well, now that everyone in the SEC can pay good money, like Bama always did and got away with, there’s a significant amount of parity! In fact, I don’t think you fix the Bama problem…even with the second coming of Bear Bryant, because now everyone in CFB and especially the SEC has a descent shot at recruiting (thanks to NIL and the portal). GBO!

Wishful thinking. They may wander in the desert for a while but they will be back. They love football in Bama, they just have questionable decision making skills.

Hey we all watched the same games for three days! I didn’t see any team that looked better than our Vols! if we’re not top ten then I must have not have seen a few teams. The coaches hate us but others who can see and don’t have to play us should put us in the top ten ALREADY!,,,

I think they are dealing with the loss of one of the greatest coaches of all-time moreso than being affected by NIL. They still have the No. 2 most talented roster in CFB according to the Talent Composite. DeBoer is just a massive step back in the coaching acumen department. Lots of teams have talent, always have, Saban's gift was always not only being able to assemble the talent but ALSO being able to get 110% out of them.

Yeah bama still loaded w probably top 3 roster talent. Hard to totally screw that up over a season, but you can always hope for Tennessee 2010’s level of dysfunction to come their way.

Okay, so this is ESPN's power index (FPI), which is subtly different than rankings. This is what rankings might look like if every single team in the nation played exactly the same schedule in exactly the same order in exactly the same places with exactly the same refs, weather, etc. It is a "who are really the best teams; not how good will they do, but how good are they compared to each other."

So if Tennessee played 9 Vandyesque teams (or worse), 1 or 2 peer competitors, and maybe 1 or 2 elite teams -- you know, the way most every program in the B10, B12, and ACC do, along with the entire G5, then yes, we might be ranked in the top 10 as well.

But see, the pollsters for the AP and Coaches, they're anticipating us having to play UGa...and Bama...and Oklahoma...and Florida...and yes, Arky, Syracuse, and Miss State -- because those last three might be among the HARDEST games for the average FBS football team.

So that's how this is different than a ranking system. It is not a ranking.

As for where we will go in the real rankings, I think the Vols _can_ jump several spot in the AP today or tomorrow. Normally, movement up the poll is dependent on people above you losing to free up spots. But that's once the teams in the stack are pretty-well-known quantities. Established. But the pollsters put Tennessee where they did, pre-season, based on some assumptions about Joey Aguilar and our offense that have now been disproven. Many of them can, and will, re-evaluate those assumptions and adjust based on current reality.

I think we could get bumped up into the 15-20 range. Potentially even higher, though it's unlikely to see such a big bump off one game against an unranked team.

We'll see.

Go Vols!

Some Monday morning šŸ€ poison.

Alabama dropped 10 spots in ESPN’s FPI rankings, which is a list based on simulations that ā€œis meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season.ā€ The Tide dropped from No. 3 to No. 13 on the list.

Tennessee, meanwhile, stayed put at No. 8(9) in the FPI rankings after its 45-26 win over Syracuse in Atlanta on Saturday.

With the shift in the computer metrics, ESPN Analytics now has Tennessee favored against the Crimson Tide in an early projection for this year’s Third Saturday in October game on Oct. 18 in Tuscaloosa. Tennessee is given a 52.7% chance, while Alabama has a 47.3% chance.
