Okay, so this is ESPN's power index (FPI), which is subtly different than rankings. This is what rankings might look like if every single team in the nation played exactly the same schedule in exactly the same order in exactly the same places with exactly the same refs, weather, etc. It is a "who are really the best teams; not how good will they do, but how good are they compared to each other."
So if Tennessee played 9 Vandyesque teams (or worse), 1 or 2 peer competitors, and maybe 1 or 2 elite teams -- you know, the way most every program in the B10, B12, and ACC do, along with the entire G5, then yes, we might be ranked in the top 10 as well.
But see, the pollsters for the AP and Coaches, they're anticipating us having to play UGa...and Bama...and Oklahoma...and Florida...and yes, Arky, Syracuse, and Miss State -- because those last three might be among the HARDEST games for the average FBS football team.
So that's how this is different than a ranking system. It is not a ranking.

As for where we will go in the real rankings, I think the Vols _can_ jump several spot in the AP today or tomorrow. Normally, movement up the poll is dependent on people above you losing to free up spots. But that's once the teams in the stack are pretty-well-known quantities. Established. But the pollsters put Tennessee where they did, pre-season, based on some assumptions about Joey Aguilar and our offense that have now been disproven. Many of them can, and will, re-evaluate those assumptions and adjust based on current reality.
I think we could get bumped up into the 15-20 range. Potentially even higher, though it's unlikely to see such a big bump off one game against an unranked team.
We'll see.
Go Vols!
