Missed much of the game for family obligation, but stayed up til midnight and watched the game video that volfreak posted on YouTube. Everything I say, of course, is said within the context of, "this is just an FCS school." But there are some things that we can glean from this game.

-Personnel observations on defense. Tyree Weathersby didn't play. I didn't think he was one of the walking wounded last week, so I assume it was something minor and he was being held out for precautionary reasons. Tyre West started and played a lot in his absence. Mariyon Dye also played a ton and played early. That's good because those 3 are likely the 3-deep at SDE until Hobbs returns. That's because Bailey played exclusively inside from what I saw. That's what I wanted to see. Campbell and Utley played a lot and looked like freshmen. Wallace got some good push, but again, it's ETSU. Tre Poteat was the first freshman CB in (besides Redmond, of course) and appears to be the 5th CB at the moment after McMurray and Wright. Dylan Lewis and Sidney Walton (who appears to be the 4th S) got in at Safety. Didn't see Merritt, but I might've missed him. Herring was the first LEO after JJ still, ahead of Ross. He played better than last weak, not losing the edge on run plays. Also saw Gentle in a lot at SDE. Funally a Jordan Burns sighting, but he didn't make any plays. He's a fast LB, but may not know where to go. Jayden Harmon is going to be very good. He may be the 4th LB soon, if he isn't already.

Personnel observations on offense: JVD is the #3 TE ahead of Brame and we saw why. Brame is uber-talented, but JVD is not only a better blocker, but is a polished pass catcher. He seems more comfortable with the college game right now. Rad Jackson looks like a future star to me. More on him and the other freshmen WRs in a minute. All 3 played and caught passes. Morris and Baker look like talented freshmen RBs with wiggle. On the Oline, I saw Grant at RT, Warren at LT, Anderson at G, Satterwhite at C, and (I think) Ogumoro at Guard...which is surprising that he'd get in before Ginther. Good to see Tommy Winton, III get some catches against his old team. That kid has been through hell and he deserved that.

-Merk doesn't look good at QB. He should have thrown a pick 6. Awful throw. The pass to Brazzell that was reviewed and spotted at the 1 is an easy TD if Merk makes a halfway decent throw. I don't know if he's lost confidence or what. Good that Mac got in and played well, though he wasn't given many opportunities to make a difficult throw.

-The bad snap by Pendleton is concerning. He had one last week that JA made a good play on and we didn't lose it. That's 2 weeks in a row and one of the reasons we heard he got the job was that Satterwhite had snap issues. That HAS to get fixed. It could hurt us in a close game.

-JA looked really good. Even if it's ETSU, he was making really good throws, was accurate down the field, and avoided those high misses on the layup throws he had against Syracuse. The opponent doesn't matter in those cases because an open throw is an open throw. He hit them this week and missed some last week. He was in complete control and very accurate. The WRs played well and I only recall one drop (Staley on the goal line on a tough catch, but still should've been caught). So it looks like both QB and WRs made progress from week 1 to week 2 cleaning up the passing game.

-Man, Max Gilbert is a weapon.

-Man, Boo Carter is a weapon at PR. And at Star. Glad he's all the way back.

-The 3 freshmen WRs, Smith, Jackson, and Dodson, all played well and all caught passed. Jackson made one catch that showed tremendous body control. Those 3 remind me of the 2003 WR class. Travis Smith reminds me of Jayson Swain (both big bodied guys- same physique, not blazing fast, but fast enough. Even the #1 is the same). Rad Jackson reminds me of Robert Meachem (same stature/build, very fast, great body control, all around WR), and Joakim Dodson reminds me of Bret Smith (skinnier WR, Smith would have been a slot in modern offenses, like Dodson).

-Bishop and Thomas seem to be producing more than Lewis at RB. I'm not sure if it's a vision thing with Lewis or if he's just not getting the blocking. It kinda seems like the latter. Regardless, he hits people. Kindas reminds me of Montario Hardesty before the light came on for him.

That's all I got. On to Georgia. If you're going to the game, lose your voice. I promise I will.

One other thing I'll add:

-It's early, but after worrying about them all offseason, these WRs may end up being a strength. The same thing happened with the DBs last year. These coaches know what they're doing. We're seeing why they didn't add a portal WR. I've already seen enough to believe that, from an ability standpoint, these guys are a clear upgrade over last year's group. Post-injury McCoy was never the same. Squirrel was undersized and injured often. Even healthy, Staley has more ability than Squirrel. We're starting to see what the coaches fell in love with about Brazzell. And the freshmen have a ton of ability and will only get better as the year goes along.

Matthews and Staley especially are guys with playmaking ability that just didn't exist in last year's group (Thornton was close, but called 911 every time he got touched).

Agree...we seem, at this point, more solid on offense, and JA is an upgrade...he just fits JH scheme better. On small sample size, if our QB and WRs and OL continue their improvements, we can beat anyone on our schedule.

I've seen some comments that SEC is down this year, but w/ portal and NIL, we are seeing the result of talent spread, and though there's no apparent "dominant" SEC team now, though will have to see on UGA, but you look at LSU, OK, Vols apparent upgrades and then UGA, TX, Bama (if they get on track). I think SEC Champ could very well have two losses. W/ Vandy and MST showing life, you will have to show up every game or you will risk taking an L. We may not be immune to that, but I'm liking our chances of being in the mix more than I was thinking in preseason.

Until further notice: YES!

The stars have not aligned for this coaching staff. We haven’t seen the perfect scenario for them, but they keep making it work and keep winning.

Good summary, NighthawkVol. Thanks for sharing. I said before the season started, this was the most talented roster we've seen in a long, long time. It was apparent the incoming WRs were talented, but so far, they have exceeded expectations. If the WRs can stay healthy, this could be a return to WR U. I really like how Aguliar spreads the wealth. He's using all of his options.

My guess, cuz it's nuttin' more than that, is that the coaching staff is working hard to make as many receivers and running backs as happy as possible by spreading the rock around - especially in this era of players jumping ship if you they feel their total talents are not being exploited by the coaching staff. Would have loved to see 2 100 yard rushers yesterday and JA pulling down 400 yards, but coaches were too smart for that, as a true championship team if full of team greatness, not individual honors to just one or two players. Go Vols - keep doing what you're doing. We have the right recipe and ingredients to handle the Dawgs this weekend.

mostly agree again, although I Think Merk is clearly the worst of the 3 I wouldnt say he was bad beyond that throw that should have been a pick 6 and the bad snaps seems more like communication issues imo.

Fun fact to throw out also, Aguilars qbr was 94.2 which is the highest in school history since pff started
