Honestly it won’t come down to fooling Georgia schematically. Kirby is kind of a good defensive coach. It’ll come down to winning 75% of the one on ones and a little luck. Let’s face it, we are getting more talented each year but not to their level yet but it’s coming.

If we get blown out, that’ll be devastating. If we make a lot of mental mistakes, that’ll be super disappointing. If we lose close, very encouraging. This game is very winnable for Tennessee. I just think we come up a tad short on some stupid mistakes and their talent and depth gets us in the 4th. I hope I’m wrong. What do some of you think our issues or advantages will be?

Our strength on defense is rush defense and Georgia’s strength on offense, so far anyway, is their running game. That’s to our advantage which means they will try to dink and dunk us down the field I think. I think our OL has a good chance in this game and Joey will need to take off at times to keep them honest. Special teams with Boo could be an opportunity?

The crowd has to impact Stockton. That happens and this will make UGA low scoring. This is the first tough start of Stockton's career. This is the first hostile environment he has ever stepped foot in

1. Turnover battle - to have a chance we have to win the turnover battle. It’s why Ole Miss upset them last year.
2. Our Dline play - to me that’s still a question mark.
3. Our ability to get off the field on 3rd and long.
4. You don’t win games like this . . . Unless your QB plays well. JA has to make plays with his arm and by running / scrambling.
5. Special teams . . . Don’t have to be spectacular . . . But we have to be solid.

Your #3 is big, we can't keep giving up first downs when we've got a team 3rd and long, that slant pass across the middle ...my god, it kills me to see us stuff the run and then give up this easy 1st down.. Kirby will try and keep our offense off the field so look for lots of running up the middle

To win a game like this we need to do the obvious fundamental things of running the ball to create manageable 3rd and 4th down situations, and stopping the run and forcing Stockton to beat us. You named the other two most important factors IMO - winning the turnover battle is essential, and if we aren't able to get off the field on 3rd (and 4th) downs, it could be a long day.

One more big one - avoid those stupid penalties that put us behind the sticks. We have to give Joey manageable situations that keep the entire playbook open, and those 2nd and 15's just can't happen.

6. Neyland needs to be so loud that the ball shakes before the UGA center gets to the line.

When I think of the loudest Neyland has been where it literally was a true advantage, I think of OK (though we gifted that game to them years ago) UF and Bama games. I really don't see a blowout either way on this one, and if it's not a UGA blowout, this will be one of the loudest games on record.

1). The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win.
2). Play for and make the breaks. When one comes your way—SCORE.
3). If at first the game—or the breaks—go against you, don’t let up . . . put on more steam.
4). Protect our kickers, our QB, our lead and our ball game.
5). Ball, oskie, cover, block, cut and slice, pursue and gang tackle for this is the WINNING EDGE.
6). Press the kicking game. Here is where the breaks are made.
7). Carry the fight to Georgia and keep it there for 60 minutes.

Kirby loves playing in Neyland
2017. 41-0
2019 43-14
2021 41-17
2023. 38–10

We must change all this on Saturday at the very least keep it within a touchdown going into the 4th. It will be very discouraging if it’s another blowout cause i think we have closed the gap between them a little bit. I also don’t think this Georgia team is as elite and talented as the previous teams.

UGA has had a lot of success on defense playing against our offense. This will be a challenge for our team.

If I was UGA, my defensive game plan is going to be to pressure JA every play. His worst season came when he was under pressure. So I would try to make him hurry and make quick decisions.

Keeping our running game performing at a high level and winning 1:1 battles at WR with short throws going for long gains will be key to keeping the ball and slowing UGA down.

Will be interesting to see how this game unfolds. What I do know is don’t bet that this week’s UGA performance has anything at all to do to next week’s performance.

Add in O-line play, along with D-line. Also, we need the O-line play to be mistake free…keep those snaps down in the troposphere! GBO!

I stated several times last week and have the same concerns this week. UTs interior defensive line has trouble. They don't get push, they seem way undersized and don't demand much double teams. They couldn't apply much pressure again yesterday, against ETSU. Yes, I know they Vols scored 72 points. When we are talking keys to a game, especially against UGAly, this is a glaring weakness that Georgia knows about and will exploit.

I don't know what the staff can do about this other than try to scheme around it, which typically is going to put tons more work on the LBs and maybe bringing secondary on more blitzing. If your tackles aren't getting double teamed, this allows more one on one blocking and RBs picking up blitzing. I just don't know how long, well we'll just outscore you each game will last. In low scoring games, or close scoring games, this can certainly be a huge difference maker. Again, I'm not sure how the Vols are in this predicament. I don't think Heupel is intentionally going small at the tackle position, because his other rosters had some big uglies in there. You have to win in the trenches this is absolutely unequivocally vital in the SEC.

The game is winnable, but by no means do I expect it.

Being in Neyland is one of the biggest reasons.

I just don’t want to get myself too hyped up about it as the disappointment is very real and I’m having knee replacement the day before so I’ll be in enough pain already without disappointment being included.

Pretty simple....running game. Like the older Florida / Tennessee games. Whoever has more success on the ground wins the game. Both defenses are very talented. Georgia has a lot more depth.

Have we stopped a 3rd and long yet???

Please change the thread title to "Keys to success against UGA".

We absolutely don't want anyone thinking this thread, or any other thread in this forum, is for UGA in any way.

Thanks!

Go Vols!
