What I found interesting about Saban is the story he told on the Gameday set last week about taking a 4-5 Michigan State team into Columbus to play Ohio State in 1998.

He said up to that week he had always been a transactional leader instead of investing in building relationships with his players and focusing on the process rather than the outcome, which is why his career record at that point was 32-23-1 (23-21-1 at MSU) and he was about to be fired. He then changed his approach that week, which changed the entire trajectory of his career. They beat Ohio State and he went 260-48 for the rest of his career.

And the coaches above Heupel probably didn’t walk into a dumpster fire program.

Spurrier walked into very mediocre-to-worse programs at Duke and Florida. It’s actually very encouraging to compare his record to CJH.

CJH actually walked into a good situation at UCF, but our situation was very bad as we all know.

I remember watching that game because I think Ohio state was ranked #1, but above UT at that time, which made games more interesting to watch.

Op- interesting topic. Thanks!

I’d like to see the coaches at their primary schools in a 4-5 yr period, or in Urban’s case, both schools.

Heup- Tennessee
Saban-Bama
Spurrier- Florida
Urban- Florida
Urban- Ohio state
Kiffin- ole miss
