I use to despise Kiffin because he left the Vols but reading about Dickey who I happen to admire and respect left the Vols went to Florida came back athletic director for the Vols. So pretty similar stories I suppose so I gotta back off Kiffin hate now.

The difference was Dickey went back to his alma mater, and he had already been here 6 years.

Kiffin's alma mater was Fresno State. He has no inkling going back to his alma mater. He was thinking Hollywood at that young age and time. To his credit he has matured a lot after getting fired @ USC on the Tarmac and having to slum at Florida Atlantic, best thing that happened to him for growing as a person.

One other consideration about Dickey, we actually played Florida in the Gator Bowl while rumors were swirling that he was leaving for Gainesville after the game. That fat bastard Woodruff should have called him into the office and said tell me you are not leaving for Florida. If Dickey wouldn;t say it Woodruff should have fired him on the spot.

I just watched the Kiffin documentary on ESPN and it gave me a newfound respect for the guy with how he’s transformed his life over the last decade. We all make mistakes and he made a lot as a young coach, but Lane Kiffin at 50 is not the Lane Kiffin we saw from age 30-40. I encourage you to watch it for yourself if you haven’t already.

There are many who will read this and not like it, and if so, that’s your problem, but I’m rooting for him.

Don't hate the guy. I do blame him for the downward spiral.... But I put myself in his shoes.

Say you were a great young coach. You get picked up at USC! Great school etc. Then after your first year the Vols come calling.... Even in my mind as an adult - I don't know that I can turn that down. My dream destination... And it's not a commonly opened job (at the time)

I think if you put yourself in those shoes you would find yourself walking too

Yup!

I always thought this by Siler (above) weeks after was a good explanation of the events.

On Kiffin

There was on a CBS story just after the USC move that's (link) is no longer available; but the writer quoted Hamilton as saying he asked Kiffin during the initial UT interview process if there was any job, he would leave UT for going forward and Kiffin told him just one... USC! Why UT then didn’t insert major USC buy-out protection in the final UT agreement; UTAD would have to answer? Bottom line if USC would have had to pay millions to get Kiffin away; they wouldn't have even picked up the phone. I'm sure others remember that story

Dickey's alma mater was FL and he had TN FB on a high at the time and Gators program in the tank so they called and went. If you have seen the Kiffin show on Netflix he admits it was a mistake to leave TN and apparently the reasons you state had a lot to do with it as his wife had some aspirations there to.

And yes he said the firing on the tarmac got his attention and his wife also filed for divorce after that to. So he hit rock bottom and learned and grew from that. So maybe give him some slack for his immaturity.

I somewhat agree with that, but one’s past can not be completely erased.

Coach Dickey says in Russ Bebb’s book, he knew he had made a huge mistake going to Florida in the first two weeks he was back! Way too many off the field issues he never had to deal with while at UT... star players heavily involved in the Anti-war movement, half the roster and staff wanted a former assistant coach as HC, UF football hadn't integrated yet and wouldn't be as smooth as Knoxville had been. An option coach, inheriting a group of pro-style recruited players. So on.

He must have had nightmares that first year knowing he walked out on a National Championship roster to step into that mess! There is satisfaction in that, I guess.

So Florida has always been shady.

Dickey was a double agent. Kiffin was a parasite. You don’t need to kiss either of their asses.
