Our revenge game is here for this year, and it looks a lot different than this time last year. Coming off a bye week, Arkansas is riding into the game licking its wounds, after losing 3 games in a row, including a dismantling at home against Notre Dame. Following that, Arky brass fired Pittman and made Motorcycle Petrino the “interim HC”, although we all wonder if this is what they had been setting up all along when they brought him in as OC. Our Vols enter this game coming off a bye week, too, and did we ever need it! Following a much closer than expected OT win against Miss St, we got some much needed rest and hopefully are entering this game healthy for the first time of the year. It’s believed we will have Hobbs back finally, and the biggest possible addition we will have is All-American CB, Jermod McCoy! It remains to be seen if he is full go or not, as there has been conflicting reports from those in the know. We all hope he’s back and can start to get up to game speed in time to go to Tuscaloosa in 2 weeks. Let’s look at the keys to the game to get the W this week.
  1. 1st quarter boys strike again. Arkansas is down, but with a changing of the guard, they may have some energy to start the game. The offense needs to ignite early and often. If the 1st quarter boys can put up 17-21 and the defense holds Arky under 7, then I think their energy will be drained pretty quickly, and the hopes of the coaching shuffle igniting the team will quickly dissolve back to reality.
  2. Get our revenge! Defense was plenty good enough last year to win, but the offense sucked, mainly because of the QB who isn’t with us. Good riddance! This isn’t the same Tennessee as last year. The explosive offense is back, and this Arkansas defense sucks based on the first 5 games of the year. I full expect this team to come out off the bye week on fire and explode, putting Arkansas away by no later than the beginning of the 4th quarter.
  3. Defense must pick either the rushing attack or the passing game, and try to shut down one or the other. We all know about Taylen Green. He is a very talented QB, both with his legs and this year with his arm. He’s 7th in the country with almost 1400 yards passing, and 17th in rushing. He is very productive. So what will Tim Banks do? That’s the $100k question. My guess is what he always does…send 4, try to stop the run with them, and when it is a pass, hope that they get home to Green and sit back in zone to keep eyes on Green. I expect we will have a spy on him too. I hope it’s Spillman, as I think he has the speed to run down Green. If McCoy is back, then I do expect us to show some man coverage a few times to test McCoy and see how he holds up at game speed. I think we need to shut down Green’s legs and see if he can handle leading them down the field throwing the ball, and deal with our crowd noise while doing it.
  4. Offense, have yourself a day! I expect to see us score early, often, and A LOT! Arky has fired the DC and promoted someone who was a DC last in the UFL. Let’s be honest…they can’t implement a new scheme in 2 weeks. I’m sure they will come out with some energy and probably send some blitzes, however, they will face our starting OL we wanted to start in game 1. OL play has been elite and will only get better with each game, as long as we can stay healthy. Joey will put up another Heisman performance with 300+ yards and 3 TDs. Brazzell has another 100+ yard game and 2 TDs. Finally, I think we run the ball at will against them to the tune of 225+ yards. We will do what we want, and will only punt if we hurt ourselves with penalties.

Prediction: Sam Pittman, Bobby Petrino, Vince Lombardi…it won’t matter who leads the hogs into this game. The Vols will be ready and fired up coming off the bye week. We will be healthy and laser focused. I don’t see this being a 4 quarter game. I think we have backups playing by the 4th quarter, and get the starters rest to be ready to travel to Tuscaloosa.

T Green and RB make me nervous, o ly bc of last year. This game has been circled.

Offense gets running game going, and defense gets it's head out of its asses.

Vols - 80
Ark-kansas - 20

This could get interesting. They had to weeks to come up with a plan against our defense. We're just going to have to man up and take it to them. I'm sure Petrino wants this one extra bad would probably put him in the driver's seat for the head job permanently.

Hope they don’t go odd front on d. Hope we have adequately gameplan ed defense for their offense. Hope the team shows up and is disciplined enough to leave no doubt.

I think Petrinos already got it from the tidbits leaking out of Fayetteville. Would think he’ll have a contract signed before the month of October is over, regardless of on field results.

Penn State is the prime example of why you don't overlook anybody-- even when they lost their coach. Let's go VOLS!!
The great Dr J said about the 76ers loss in the 1980 NBA finals to the Lakers missing an injured Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and leaning on a rookie magic Johnson going from point guard to center ... "When you play a team that has major changes, It is if you play a team that you've never played before". The point is that we are going to be facing a team with a bye week and lots of changes, so it does make for a concerning game. Although, I hope our team is hyped and focused about payback from that egg we laid last year in the middle of their field.
