Like many changes to the game, I wasn't so sure about the kickoff rules implemented last year in the NFL. However after watching a few games, it's starting to grow on me.

It seems like college ball has pretty much settled into 90%+ drilling the ball through the back of the end-zone. I kind of like the new strategy and play available.

What do you guys think?

Plus...I think Boo Carter would be quite the weapon under those rules. It would be fun to see some player breakout's as kickoff returners.

I would like to see this change. Currently they are basically just spotting the ball. Why even kick it?

I hope they don't change to the NFL kickoff... It sucks! Also, I seriously have my doubts Boo is here next year.

How about we just go back to the old way and actually HAVE kick off returns and punt returns, like football was supposed to be played?
Because all the kickers can kick it through the end zone. At least now with the NFL, there's a return on almost every kickoff. That's more like the "old way" than the current college game. You know, the way football is supposed to be played

I usually don’t like copying the NFL on every single thing. But this is one I can get on board with. It keeps the return option much more in play. It meets the objective of slowing down the gunners coming at you and it brings the return game back. Heck in college it’s rare anybody returns a kick. It’s football, the return and kickoff needs to be a part of it. I think it’s also silly that we are kicking players out of games on a unintentional targeting. If it is clearly intentional then yes, but when it’s obvious it was just bad luck unintentional it’s ridiculous to throw them out. Common sense should apply here, it’s football. I don’t want dirty plays tolerated but with a lot of these targeting there was nothing malicious or intentional about them. GBO

What the F ever. Still, having returns is more like the game was supposed to be played as the founders of the game intended. Adjustments must be made through time.
Nah, he's right. He also forgot to mention moving the ball back to the 20 after a kickoff touchback.

I enjoyed the old system more.

I get that player safety was the initiative to the change and it simply isn't going back, though.

While the new NFL kickoffs look goofy, they are a whole lot more fun than watching teams kick it through the endzone every single time. I don't think touch backs should come out to the 35 like the NFL however. I'm for whatever incentivizes more kick returns.

Yes. I miss the old kickoff returns. Its only a matter of time. Make a good incentive for more returns like place the ball after a touchback at only the 20 yard line.

I don't like it. But I agree.

Why do you not like the NFL kickoff rules? It encourages teams to actually make returns and not just have a touchback almost every time. It has worked too.

Since a touchback spots the ball at the 35 yard line this season, return rates in the NFL compared to last year have doubled, and tripled since 2023. I am so tired of seeing touchbacks or fair catches on almost every kickoff in college football. It is so boring. I’d welcome a change that encourages more returns.

Only because they moved the kicking tee up 10 yards.
This is not true. When I started watching football in the 90s, the kickoff was from the 35 yard line every year. In 2007, college football changed it to the 30 yard line, so it was the same as the NFL. They then changed it back to the 35 yard line in 2012, and it’s been the same ever since.

I don’t know where you’re getting this idea that ā€œthey moved the kicking tee up 10 yardsā€ from.

Things trickle down from the NFL level faster now than they used to.
Good things and Bad things. I for one do not want college to mirror the pros. The best thing about college is that you have schemes from all different eras come into play. It's good to watch an old wishbone team meet a pass happy team. Coaches select schemes that give them an advantage with the talent that they have. I watched Chris Peterson beat Oklahoma with the old statue of liberty play. It was neat. You don't get that in the pros. College is wide open. Pros are kinda stale.

Do you watch the NFL? That last comment is pretty funny. The Lions run at least one trick play a game.
