I saw my first Kentucky game in 1958 when in one of the worst games in college football history the Kats won 6-2. My father and 3 uncles drove up from Chattanooga for the Famous Ice Bowl game in 1950 when the Vols beat Bear Bryants best Kentucky team 7-0. The numbers in this series are pretty unbelievable:
Series record 86-26- 9. According to David Paschall in the TFP our 86 wins against one team is second only to Alabama's 88 over MSU in the SEC.
Surprisingly after the General retired in 52 the Vols were 3-8 against the Kats from 53 through 64. The UK coach during most of this was Blanton Collier who was fired by UK and went onto win a NFL Championship with the Cleveland Browns.
Since the 1964 game the Vols are 54-7 in the series. This includes runs of 11 in a row from 65-76 and the 27 game run from 85-2011.
The Vols have played 37 games at Commonwealth Stadium and are 33-4.
In an unbelievable run the Vols scored 56, 59, 59, 56 and 59 points in the 5 game run from 96-2000.
No wonder UK is my favorite game and Lexington is my favorite trip!
