I wasn't around for the Johnny Majors years but I bet his legacy as a player and coaches getting a longer leash back then were the only reasons he wasn't fired going 500 over his first 5-6 seasons.
100%. That and the fact he won a championship the year before he came here, so he had proven he could win.

yeah, different time...back then it was pretty much a 5 year rule. those early years until we got Alan Cockrell, were really tough.

Johnny came in with a championship ring on his finger from Pitt and was beloved as a great player during his time at UT. He was given a longer leash for those reasons. Someone had to clean up Battle’s mess.

HC Record at UT first 60 games (conference record included)

Neyland - 54-2-4 (34-2-4)
Fulmer - 50-10 (35-7)
Battle - 46-12-2 (17-11-1)
Heupel - 43-17 (23-14)
Dickey - 43-13-4 (21-9-4)
Wyatt - 35-22-3 (21-12-3)
Jones - 34-26 (14-23)
Majors - 30-29-1 (13-18)
The SEC wasn't nearly as strong during the Fulmer and Neyland years as it has been during the Heupel era.

Can you imagine what Heupel’s record would be if he had walked into Fulmer or Battle’s situation, that would’ve been wonderful for Vols players and fans.
