Smokey X, a beloved University of Tennessee mascot, diagnosed with cancer

According to the university, the nearly 14-year-old Bluetick Coonhound made his debut as a loyal ambassador for the Vols in the 2013 football season.

Aw. Poor Smokey. I grew up in an old school household so sick animals were dealt with in a way that is abhorrent by today's standards.

I hope Smokey has no pain and good times regardless of the treatment choices his owners make.

You never want to hear this diagnosis be it person or animal. I know that Smokey x will be amongst the billions of dogs to greet me when I get to heaven.

How long has Smokey X roamed the sidelines? It feels like it's been a very brief amount of time!

his first year was 2013....same as Butch Jones.....retired in 2023 so we got to enjoy him for 10 years.....I don't know where to find it but there were some pictures taken on senior night at the end of the game and after the waltz and final Rocky Top where he stretched out at midfield and took it all in like he knew it was over...would love to find those

At least he’s still here for now. I wonder if they will try to treat the cancer. I keep seeing some interesting theories on parasites and nutrition these days. Would be amazing to see the old boy beat cancer, even though he’s pretty old in blue tick hound years.

My last hound had to be put down due to cancer about 20 years ago and I haven’t wanted to go through that again ever since.

My favorite Vol. 14 years is a pretty good life for a dog of his size. I would imagine they’ll just try to make him comfortable and pass on at that age. Smokey X definitely saw some ruff times during that span of TN football, but he also got to see it turn around. Sic em Smokey
