Thought it would be good/interesting to share some outside perspective on Heupel from another fanbase. In particular one whose actively looking for a HC.

TLDR: They're largely very high on him and have respect for what he's done & the situation he inherited when he arrived. He's not their number 1 choice (Kiffen appears to be) but overall they'd be very happy with the hire. This is one of multiple threads they have on him and their opening.

This season has felt like a kick in the nuts with the defensive struggles & with how the UGA, Bama & OU games played out. Even more so with the missed FG vs UGA & an OU game where we dominated at times and had nothing to show for it. If Gilbert makes that kick vs UGA this season has an entirely different outlook. If Aguilar doesn't kill us with 3 turn overs against OU (the fumble largely not being his fault) - same thing. He put us in a position to win both games, but he can't make the kick or throw the ball. Reading other fanbases thoughts on him has helped give me some new perspective and appreciate what we have despite the flaws. Thought some of you might enjoy the outside perspective as well.

There’s other coaches out there. I like Heupel but his choices during this offseason really mucked up things. They kick off Nico but not Boo? I understand why, but what good has that choice done for the team?

Not getting a single DT or S from the portal after losing 4 of each on one off-season.

He got lucky with Aguilar as he did with Hooker. If Nico doesn’t want to go to UCLA then Joey never comes here. Then we lose to
Arkansas - L
Alabama- L
Georgia- L
Miss State -L
Oklahoma- L

Pure damn luck he fell into our laps. He’s accounted for as many TDs in 9 games as Nico did in 13 last season.

We’d be 4-5 because of injury, no QB to stretch the field and because Heupel didn’t go after even ONE DT or S from the portal. Banks and Heupel have nothing to blame but themselves for not being 8-1 and ranked in the top 5 right now.

I like the potential of Heupel but some obvious things just aren’t obvious to him and that’s a big damn problem!

Clock & timeout management, mismanaging the transfer portal following the end of last season & the lack of defense for most of this season (a byproduct of not addressing needs in the transfer portal) are all valid concerns. We had a little watch party at our house last night & those things were brought up repeatedly. Despite those issues - he's a successful, young & intelligent head coach that's still growing. Being highly thought of by multiple major programs with openings illustrates that. He needs to continue to evolve & make some changes, but I'm a long way from writing him off. Maybe I'm jaded & overly grateful for the success he's brought us after a stench soaked 15 year stretch prior to this. That would be a valid counter argument. All that being said - The last thing I want to do is go up against him at a school like Florida or LSU.

Weird to see you making anti-CJH posts LittleVol. Not like you from the posts I have seen of yours anyway.

Pertaining to Safeties...a portion of our fanbase that actually does keep up with the roster (small portion honestly) mentions losing Jacobe Thomas to FSU as really hurting us. Few apparently know about or ever mention that Jourdan Thomas was supposed to be back this year, Matthews jumped ship for more money at Vandy, etc...AND Shaedy Hayward got flipped from us last minute because we had a no contact period which nobody else had...due to Pruitts sanctions from the NCAA. It was a perfect storm at Safety this time around. It has killed our defense this year almost as much as missing McCoy and Gilbert at Corner all year. Moreso than CB in the run game actually. I bet the farm it doesnt happen again next year. Farooq has improved a lot with all his reps. We have 2 Safeties coming in 26 if you believe that Wyatt can stay there. We will likely grab at least one starter caliber Safety from the portal as well as DTackles in January.

* edit LV i know you do keep up with players and recruits like I do. Wasnt knocking you personally bud

Thank you to the OP for posting this thread. I cannot quote posts right now for some reason. The small % of our fanbase that loses their minds and want to fire errbody when we lose a game is very annoying and honestly detrimental to VN. Our coaches win more games and go to more playoffs the last 3 years than anyone in the SEC besides UGA and Bama. We are very lucky to have them

Idk why they would fire Brian Kelly just to hire someone who has a nearly identical record as Brian Kelly
I know you meant that as a slight but think about the 2 situations separately.
LSU had won a national title in 2019. 2 years before the BK hire.
TN hadn't won a national title since 1998.
These 2 programs were not equal in talent to one another. The fact that Heup has a similar record, I think, speaks pretty well for the coaching job he has done at UT. I'm not saying it's perfect but he's achieved more with less here than BK

It doesn't help that Tennessee is out of the playoffs. Because coaches not in the playoffs have no real incentive to not field discussions from schools with openings during bowl prep. No coach who is sought after is going to worry about Mayo Bowl practice over listening to top 5 job openings.

I often find these comparisons dumb because say the Nico situation never turned out to occur because you are trying to use Nico's UCLA staff as what he would have had here.

Heupel would have been in his 3rd offseason with Nico. Nico is more mobile than Joey. Joey can hit deep balls at a very high rate where Nico cant.

I for one think Huepel has a great track record with QB's regardless if they came from portal or he recruited them. People saying that Nico would be in the same situation here in a 3rd season with Heupel as he has had in UCLA are clowns.

By saying that, you either think very little of Josh Heupel which is just dumb on its face or you are just blowing smoke out of your ass because you have rage bias.
