Serious question. We have the largest prison population in the free world (and probably the unfree world also). Is it because we just have an abnormal number of bad people here in the USA or is it because we make so many things in this country illegal and worthy of spending time in jail?

Could this nation stand to have a culling of the laws on the books?

We definitely are too quick to incarcerate and we definitely need to cull the laws/regulations on the books.

You hear the media always complaining about a do nothing Congress. That is what we should want unless they're rescinding laws.

Its both, but it doesnt help that our prison systems aren't doing their jobs. Prison should be for rehabilitation while also providing crime deterrence. It is not achieving either of the two.

Who cares if it rehabs someone people are who they are and if nothing else it's punishment. Although we may have too many laws most of the frivolous ones result in a slap on the wrist. If you're dumb enough to keep doing something and getting caught then see ya.

No argument there, but how do you turn prisons into rehab centers without forcing a good percentage of the inmates into something they're not, civilized human beings.

Those saying "too many laws," what conduct (that imprisons a substantial number of people) should be decriminalized?

If a court doesn't have the threat of imprisonment, how is it supposed to enforce its orders?

We don't have debtors prison in America... or at least we shouldn't. Plus, why should the courts be involved in what a families finances should be?
