Although the team as a whole came out flat and laid a huge turd, there is one player that hurt us not once, but twice due to his selfish behavior. And that is Tight End Austin Pope. First, we converted on a fourth and one as Guarantano threw a nice bullet of a pass to Pope. But instead of allowing himself to be tackled at the one or two yard line for a chance to score, he extends his arm to try to bring it on himself to get the touchdown where he had the ball punched out and the ball turned back over to Florida. And the coaching staff has emphasized on not doing that after Banks done that last week at UTEP. But it didn't matter to him as he wanted to be the one to score and get the glory. Then a couple of plays later, we make a beautiful run play that was nullified because one of our guys couldn't keep his composure as he knocked a Florida Gator on his ass. Who was that guy? Pope again.

I hope that Coach Pruitt lit into his ass because his selfishness cost us two huge plays that could have made a difference. It is sad that Butch brought in a few players that don't want to think about the team as a whole, but only themselves. I hope that Pruitt made him do laps or sprints as punishment for hurting his tean due to his cockiness and selfishness.

Can't go with you on Pope being selfish trying to score there.....that's pretty ridiculous IMO. He should have secured the ball better, but he's there to try to score a TD and him being selfish had nothing to do with him scoring or not.

Don’t agree with all you said, but clearly a situation at the goal that happened before and CJP made it a point that unless it was 4th and goal don’t do it!
Maybe the lesson here is to the many blaming sloppy play on coaching.
You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink!
Maybe a lot of not drinking going on with players and that could be the reason we ain’t getting better in the same areas as before.

Okay. Pope was stupid then. I don't know which is worse. Either way, no excuse for that play with a chance at being tackled no worse than on the two, first and goal. The most obviously bone-headed play from a large collection of bone-headed plays committed that night.

Pope wasn't alone, so many missed assignments. Lack of Discipline is the #1 problem with many, many of these players.

I think were going to have plenty of scholarships going forward for anyone who wants to play at Tennessee. I think a lot of players are on the radar to be asked to move on. One of our biggest problems with this team mow as very few of them have any mental IQ to playing a football game. Errors like Banks and Pope made are evidence. No reason to try to do it all get what you can, but keep the ball secure.

This may be the dumbest post I've ever read on VolNation. Are you really going to call a player out for being "selfish" for trying to score? Was he supposed to just fall down when the defender tried to tackle him?
TEs supposed to slide like QBs now. :)

It's fairly clear to everyone that you have never actually played the sport. In the heat of the moment, players make plays. It's nearly impossible to think as you are trying to score and change the momentum of the game to remember that "oh yeah, Pruitt said not do this" as players are on auto-pilot at that moment .This was incredibly unfortunate but is definitely not selfish by Pope. And for the record as someone already pointed out - he didn't have the ball punched out. I've tried to forget most of everything from the game, so I can't really comment on the penalty and I'm unwilling to watch anything from that game again to find it. However, if we removed every "selfish player" that got a penalty, we wouldn't have many players left including Trey Smith who had a personal foul called on him.

This is stupid, the only thing this kid did wrong was not secure the ball good enough. He had a chance to help his team score. He tried, which more than what a whole lot of this team did Saturday. Had he scored there, it might have boosted everyone's confidence, instead it deflated everyone and we got what we got.

Have any of you morons ever played a sport?

Maybe the running backs should go ahead and fall before they are about to be tackled so we don't fumble.

How did our fanbase become so stupid?

My bigger issue with Pope was his play as the "fullback" out of the I formation. He blocked about as many people as I did Saturday night, and I was sitting on my fat butt watching from home. It was painful to watch him try to lead block. It didn't help of course that the O-Line was being pushed into the backfield most plays though

I don't know if he was trying to reach the ball out or trying to secure it. Looked to me like he saw the Florida player about to tackle him and was trying to reach out with the other hand and knocked it out of his hand. The Florida player didn't hit the ball at all. Can't fault the guy for trying to make a play. Too many things went bad for Tennessee in that game to overcome.

If you look at the video, he hits the ball out of his own hand when he brings up his other hand to secure it. lol
I didn't come in here to bash on the kid but I did notice this too (as did most of the country). It really was disastrous from the beginning. Whatever could go wrong, went wrong.
