Josh Dobbs highlights from first start for Pittsburgh

Former Vol quarterback Josh Dobbs made his NFL preseason debut last night for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

To say he got off to a rocky start is being kind. Dobbs threw two interceptions in his first four pass attempts. You can watch the first one below, but it appeared to be a terribly underthrown ball that didn’t end up in the same zip code as the intended receiver. I say ‘appeared to be’ because its possible, I suppose, that Dobbs and the receiver weren’t on the same page with the route. Regardless, the result was about as ugly as it gets.

With that start, it would have been easy for an NFL rookie to fold. But not Dobbs. A 16-yard scamper, reminiscent of his days at Tennessee, seemed to give him a spark. Three plays later Dobbs hit Cobi Hamilton deep down the field for a 44-yard gain that set up a Steelers field goal.

Later that same quarter, the Giants turned the ball over deep in their own territory and Dobbs immediately went for the end zone, firing a 28-yard touchdown pass to Hamilton with 33 seconds remaining before half.

Dobbs finished the night a respectable 8-of-15 for 100 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions. He had a second touchdown pass called back for holding.

“From a performance standpoint it’s been up and down,” Steelers’ coach Mike Tomlin said after the game. “Not surprised by that. It’s a natural part of the maturation process. I do like the look in his eye, his level of communication in the midst of it all. From that standpoint it’s very encouraging.”

  1. Once Dobbs got that run under his belt the lights came on for him. We had seen this during his days at Tennesse. He will learn from his mistakes and continue to improve as a pro. I am looking forward to seeing him in his next game.

    • I agree, he definitely seemed to settle down and things clicked for him a bit more after that successful run. He’s going to be fun to watch.

Thanks for the comment, Orange Swagger.

  2. Thanks for pulling these highlights together, Freak ! I’m looking forward to the next one as well…
