August 15, Tuesday (updating throughout the day, check back for the latest)
- Butch announced after practice that freshman wide receiver Jacquez Jones is out for the season.
- Tennessee had practice number 13 on Tuesday. Check the thread to see the latest videos. Quote of the day from Tyler Byrd: “I told y’all I’m a 1st round DB!” It’s also worth noting that Eli Wolf was awarded a scholarship at the beginning of practice.
- The 1907 matchup between Tennessee and Georgia Tech was quite controversial. Did Tennessee win 4-2 or were the Yellow Jackets victorious 6-4?
- SEC Network analyst Booger McFarland is at it again, talking about Butch Jones. “Sometimes coaches can only get you to the hump & not over the hump. Tennessee may have to make a decision after the season,” he said on the Paul Finebaum Show.
- Tennessee football released a pretty cool short highlight video (I guess that’s what you would call it) today. If nothing else, it might add a little pep to your step this afternoon.
- Tennessee commitment Matthew Flint says he’s worked hard this summer on his endurance. “I did a lot of running over the summer to help get my endurance up because most of us play both ways,” said Flint, who also starts at receiver and had nine touchdown catches last season. “I feel like being in better condition will help me get my tackles up this year so hopefully I can make All-State.” — player thread: ’18 AL OLB Matthew Flint
- Player to watch. Chad Simmons wrote this of Vol target Daijun Edwards, “If you don’t know about this 2020 RB already, you will.” Tennessee offered last Friday.
- Four position groups are performing better than expected at the midway point of preseason practice, according to Vince Ferrara: wide receivers, tight ends, defensive line and defensive backs. Linebackers and offensive line are worse, while quarterbacks, running backs and special teams are as expected.
- I was a bit surprised to read this morning that Tennessee wide receiver Marquez Callaway was a track guy in high school. I wasn’t surprised by the track part, but rather the events in which he participated: high jump, long jump and, um, shot put. “During track practice, I was playing around with my friend,” Callaway said. “He was doing the shot put. I was throwing farther than him, so they put me in the shot put.” … “I lost in the round right before state,” he said. “I did the high jump, long jump and then had to do shot put. So I was winded.”
- Did you snag a pair of the new Tennessee Week Zero Nike Free Trainers? Surprisingly, some sizes are still available. So if you’re looking for a pair of sneakers to wear to the Georgia Tech game that scream ‘I’m a hardcore Tennessee fan,’ give these a look.
- I didn’t really want to comment on it, but as the smoke thickens, it seems as though there might be some truth to yesterday’s player suspension rumors. If true, it’s unfortunate that after a long offseason of hard work, the excitement of the 2017 season will be tainted with unfortunate circumstances. I’m still holding out hope that the rumors aren’t true.
- We’re only (Cortez McDowell) 20 days until the first kickoff.
- Yesterday was fairly uneventful, as far as factual news anyway, but if you missed it, check out yesterday’s FreakNotes.
