Tennessee fan’s learned just a few days ago that star point guard Josh Selby decided to back off his commitment to Bruce Pearl and the Vol basketball team and re-open things back up. Now VolNation has had a chance to speak with the star guard’s mother, Mrs. Witherspoon, about the situation and where things are at currently with her son and his recruitment.

“Right now we are just over our heads with how many coaches are calling us right now. We decided that when Josh committed awhile back to Tennessee he was only really looking at one other school which was Louisville and we felt that he might have jumped the gun a little early on decided. The atmosphere at Tennessee was good and he was getting a lot of attention, but we didn’t fully understand the process about being committed and that we couldn’t continue to speak with other schools,” explained Mrs. Witherspoon.

When a school losses a recruit sometimes you could think that school is out of the picture but in this case it appears Tennessee and Coach Bruce Pearl are still in the sweepstakes and could still end up with Selby according to his mother.

“Tennessee is still in the picture for sure. We just wanted to make sure that Josh gets the best school and so we need to double check with every school and see how they all stack up. Right now Josh is still wide open and we are waiting for the word to get out. Schools are just now starting to hear about him de-committing so we are going to let things settle down and go from there,” said Witherspoon.

Witherspoon informed VolNation there are no schools currently in the lead or considered a favorite at this point.

“Right now we have no favorites and no schools who Josh is more interested in than the rest. We are just waiting to see who all comes after him and then go from there. We are going to look at what schools offer a style of play that works best for Josh, the relationship with past players and the staffs, and the overall community support of the school. Distance won’t be a factor for Josh and for myself. The family wants what is best for Josh and if that means him going for away for school then so be it. We just want what is best,” said Witherspoon.

With the family out in Las Vegas and the Global Games coming up in a few weeks Josh and his family will sit down after the Global games and iron out a list of schools that he will focus on for college.

VolNation will keep tabs on this recruiting process and once something happens will give you the latest update. VolNation would like to wish good luck to Josh and his family as they approach this decision.

Didn’t understand the meaning of commitment? Yeah, Right!
An athlete should never let his mother make the decisions in his recruiting process, at least if she doesn’t have a dictionary.

I’m just glad that the kid is going to college unlike some great athletes I knew, who didn’t. Josh, take your time, I would love to see ya in orange, but if you don’t, may God bless you in choosing the right school. If it’s Kentucky, we got problemms, lol.
