in Tennessee Vols Football Recruiting

Valdosta, GA– Valdosta is no stranger to seeing elite talent head off to major college programs. Through the years, Valdosta high, and Lowndes have sent more than a few prospects to the next level. This year one of the best players at Valdosta is tight end Jay Rome. Standing at 6’6″ 235 lbs, he is a force to be reckoned with on the gridiron. Jay has accumulated nearly 20 offers already. However he has decided on 6 schools that stand out to him early. Volnation got the exclusive on his early top 6, and where the Vols stand.

“Yeah I have around 20 offers right now. But I have put together a top early 6 schools that are high on my list. In no order they are, Georgia, Clemson, Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, Auburn. They are all recruiting me as a tight end. I think I present some matchup problems with my versatility. I can play at wide receiver and am too big for defensive backs. When I’m lined up as a tight end, I’m too fast for most linebackers to cover. I have been to Florida, Georgia, and Clemson unofficially, I’m hoping to see the rest soon.”

Jay was expected for Tennessee’s junior day this past weekend. But the forecast showed possible snow showers, and in addition, he had a basketball game to play in. The team lost unfortunately to the state’s top ranked team. He claims that he has no immediate plans for this spring with basketball now over.

“I don’t have anything planned for right now, basketball just ended. I’m in no rush for a decision since basketball just finished. I’m just going to work on improving for my senior season. I want to get better at finishing my blocks and my route running. You can never be too good at route running. I want to really work on getting quicker out of my cuts.”

The big time recruit then took a few minutes to discuss what he likes about each of his top 6 schools.

“Georgia, a place I visited earlier on. It was real electric at the game, and they are the in-state school. I could definitely see myself there, and they are recruiting me very hard.”

“Clemson, they have always been in the running. My dad went there and they are recruiting me very hard. I visited for a game and they made me feel very welcome, they definitely captured my attention early.”

“Tennessee, I have not visited there yet, but I would really like to go. I wanted to go this weekend, but I just didn’t feel comfortable with the possible snow forecast. I talked with the new coaches there, and they explained how they would really like me there. One of our DB’s from an earlier class is there, he tells me about it.”

“Alabama, of course they are in there. It’s a great program, they won a national championship. I talked to coach Saban, I definitely need to visit there.”

“Florida, Coach White, the TE coach there has been in contact for over a year. I visited last spring for a spring practice. It’s only 2 hours away which is nice. It’s just a great program.”

“Auburn, also a school I have not visited. But once I talked to coach Looper there I was drawn in. He seems really down to earth and got my attention early.”
Lastly, Jay took a few minutes to break down what he expects from his senior season next year.

“Well we had a disappointing season last year. We had a whole lot of sophomores and juniors on the team, and we lost in the first round. Plus we had the coaching change too, which was tough. I think this year we are going to be outstanding, we have lots of college prospects. The talent level as a whole is very good. I’m real excited to get after it.”

Jay,
I know your father and I’ve followed you practically all your “sports life” at Valdosta. Take it from a transplanted Tennessean who is a Vol all the way, you will love Tennessee and they will do you right. Our new coach and staff are a class act and totally professional. Go Vols and tell you Dad no offense intended.
