in Tennessee Vols Football Recruiting

Brentwood, TN.- Another star in the state of Tennessee continues to shine. Brentwood academy has a playmaker on their hands in athlete Derek King. He’s an absolutely gifted runner and has the ability to play on either side of the ball or special teams. After a slower start to his recruitment, spring has been a good time for the 5’10” 180 pound star. We caught up with him to get the latest on his recruitment.

“It’s going real well I have 13 offers, I talk to a lot of schools. Auburn, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Louisville, Wake Forest, Memphis, and Kansas are a few of my offers. Kansas is my most recent one. I am being recruited for running back and corner, my offers are split up. I also talk to Notre Dame, Alabama, and Miami. I have been talking to Alabama a lot lately. The SEC schools are coming pretty hard, definitely the hardest. I like the SEC because it’s the best conference wit the best football players. I want to be a part of the best and play against the best.”

Tennessee has been hot after this prospect in recent weeks. He has visited Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, and Auburn. It was on his Tennessee visit where he earned a scholarship offer.

“The visit went real well. Coach Dooley offered on the visit, it was very exciting. He told me his plan to turn around the program not only on the field but off the field. I like that, he said he’s looking for high character players like me. Coach Russell is recruiting me from there. They like me to play cornerback for them.”

Derek mentioned he has no top list but that the SEC schools are standing out early.

Alabama coaches have been hot after the Tennessee prospect as of late. He spoke about what he’s hearing from the Tide.

“Alabama also likes me at cornerback. I talked to coach Saban during the visit, he’s known for working with corners. I’m trying to get up there for a camp and I think a good camp will help me get an offer.”

Speed is one of Derek’s best assets. He spoke about what coaches like in his game on both sides of the ball.

“At corner it’s my speed, they tell me I’m pretty fast. They also tell me I’m strong and I get my hands on the receivers. At running back it’s my speed and strength. They also comment a lot on my ability to hit home run plays. I can always get better though. I am working hard on my footwork since you always use your feet. I’m hitting the weight room so I can get stronger and faster.”

As for summer visits he’s hoping to get back up to Tennessee again and hopefully Auburn too, among other SEC programs. He also mentioned he will take some official visits first before making a college decision.

The recruiting process can be hectic for many top recruits. Derek seems to be taking it all in stride.

“It can be hectic but it’s a huge blessing. To be ale to talk to top coaches and schools is fun. My mom and dad will be involved in the process but the decision is mine. I’m just looking for a place with good academics first. I want a good coaching staff and an environment that feels good, like home.”
