ForumsTennessee’s youthful and talented football roster produced four selections to the 2010 SEC Coaches’ All-Freshman Team, announced Thursday by the league office.
Offensive lineman Ja’Wuan James, wide receiver Justin Hunter, defensive end Jacques Smith and linebacker John Propst were tabbed by the 12 league coaches, who could not vote for their own players. Tennessee’s four team members tied for second-most in the conference.
James was one of 10 Vols to start every game this season and one of just four to see action in every single quarter of 2010. James helped tailback Tauren Poole to the SEC’s fifth-best rushing mark at 82.8 yards per game. Down the stretch, the Suwanee, Ga., native assisted quarterback Tyler Bray’s efforts the compile three 300-yard passing performances, making him one of just three signal-callers in the SEC to do so.
Hunter led the Vols with a 27.1-yard receiving average, finishing with 15 catches for 407 yards. Only Poole (12) and Denarius Moore (10) scored more than Hunter’s six touchdowns, and the Virginia Beach, Va., product finished with nine catches of at least 20 yards or more. Hunter was one of seven Vols true freshmen to play in every game, including a pair of starts.
Smith also appeared in every game this season and ranked fourth among UT’s defensive linemen with 24 tackles. The Ooltewah native registered a tackle for loss on five separate occasions and had sacks against Memphis and Mississippi. He forced a fumble in the win over the Tigers and contributed four quarterback hurries to tie for fourth on the team.
Propst played in 10 games and contributed 14 tackles during his collegiate debut season. The Hoover, Ala., product posted a career-best six stops at Georgia, including his lone tackle for loss of the season. Propst added multiple-tackle performances against both UT Martin (4) and Mississippi (2).
