Tennessee picked up its 21st commitment for the class of 2011 on Monday night when Mississippi junior college cornerback Izauea Lanier committed to Tennessee. The 6-foot, 180-pound athlete was initially part of Auburn’s 2009 class but did not qualify.
Lanier committed to Auburn again in February of 2010, making him the Tigers’ first commitment in the 2011 class. But in November, the two mutually agreed to part ways. That’s when Tennessee offered the talented athlete.
Lanier has three years of eligibility to play three years.
ESPN Evaluation
(Done for the Class of 2009 as an athlete) Lanier is an impressive athlete with all the tools to develop into a good skill player at the next level. He has the size, speed, smooth hips and ball skills that should make him more coveted on the recruiting trail. On offense, he is used in a variety of ways and is a difference maker with the ball in his hands. Can change speeds and kick into a second gear when needing to pull away in the second level. Top-end play speed is very good. Dangerous in space as well with his jump-cut and overall smooth movement skills. Can change direction sharply with gearing down much. Very slippery to wrap up and can earn productive yards after contact with his strong, wiry frame and determination as a runner. However, he projects more as a slot receiver and would need to polish up his hands (bit of a body catcher) and route running skills. Could get a look at safety with his good range, breaking quickness and long frame. Return skills add to his upside. Overall, Lanier is a very versatile athlete and a kid who could provide depth and a spark in all three phases of the game at the next level. A sleeper on the recruiting trail and a real competitor.
