KNOXVILLE — Tennessee junior tight end Mychal Rivera has been named to the midseason watch list for the John Mackey Award, given to the nation’s top tight end. Rivera has been among the national leaders in receptions and receiving yards among all tight ends with his 19 catches for 248 yards. He is second on the Vols in catches and third in receiving yards.
Rivera equaled entire 2010 season total for catches (11) and passed yards total (112) in third game of 2011 season. He set a new career-high 85 yards on five catches vs. Georgia (10/8) and made a career-best six catches vs. Cincinnati (9/10) for 54 yards. That total of six was the most my a UT tight end since Chris Brown in 2007.
Rivera’s yardage total against Georgia was the most by a tight end since Jason Witten hauled in 125 yards in the 2002 Citrus Bowl.
Witten was a semifinalist for the Mackey Award in 2002 while Luke Stocker was one last season in 2010

BETHPAGE, N.Y. – The 2011 John Mackey Award midseason watch list has been released by the Nassau County Sports Commission. Given annually to the best collegiate tight end, the award recipient is selected by vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee and the 2011 John Mackey winner will be presented live at the Home Depot ESPN College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on December 8, 2011 on ESPNU. Other key Mackey Award dates include the announcement of the 2011 Mackey semi-finalists on November 14, 2011 and the announcement of the 2011 Mackey finalists on November 21, 2011. The John Mackey Award midseason watch list is an update from the preseason watch list. This list is meant to draw attention to tight ends in contention for the annual award based on their performance in the first half of the active season.
