Mike Wegzyn: local spotlight

When evaluating local quarterback talent, one name that has emerged on the radar is Knoxville Catholic signal-caller Mike Wegzyn.

Wegzyn, who just recently moved to Knoxville from Michigan, appears to have all the tools of a legitimate division one prospect. At 6’5, 210, he is not only a solid passer but also a very physical player – something he credits to his older brother who is a preferred walk-on at Tennessee.

“Since he plays at Tennessee and is a tight end, he has a bigger build than me,” said Wegzyn. “He plays with a ton of aggression in every sport. Whenever we would be playing basketball out in the street, he would hit me around so that helped me get tough. And I would always have to play with his friends too and they were a few years older so that helped me compete at a higher level.”

Wegzyn definitely appears to be tough. Just ask the Grambling linebacker he ran over in his junior highlight video.

“When I play I try to be physical,” Wegzyn said. “I feel that definitely can’t hurt and I’m not afraid to get in there and hit somebody. Also this past year I was pressured a lot when I was playing so I was forced to run to try to make plays happen.”

While he prefers to be a pocket-passer, Wegzyn has proven he throw on the move and make plays with his feet.

“It’s something I became comfortable with but most of the time it was pretty necessary with what I was working with,” said Wegzyn. “I’m looking forward to being in the pocket more this year with the line that I have and with the team I’m going to be playing with.”

Even though he has only been in school for less than two weeks, Wegzyn is already showing that he understands the importance of getting to know his lineman and receivers.

“I’ve been there about a week and a half now but from what I’ve seen it’s looking great so far,” Wegzyn said. “I have become good friends with some receivers and (lineman) Kyler (Kerbyson). I’m definitely excited for what the season is going to be like. I’m trying to set up some throwing with some of my receivers to get back in touch and get a feel for some of them.”

Many kids may not be thrilled with the idea of changing schools halfway through their junior year, but this young prospect is embracing the situation and likes what he has seen of the state so far.

“My whole family has been really impressed with the state of Tennessee in general — how nice everybody is and how beautiful everything is.” said Wegzyn. “The University of Tennessee is amazing.”

Wegzyn is still awaiting his first formal offer but he is currently hearing from a number of different schools including Cincinnati, Tennessee, and Michigan State, among others. Meanwhile, he plans to attend several camps this summer to help improve his game and showcase his talents.

“I’m going to attend the Ellite 11 Camp in Oklahoma and then I’m going to attend the Midwest Elite Camp and I’m looking around trying to find some others,” Wegzyn said.

I watched this kids video and I’m impressed! I hope he does chose UT. The way he ran over the LB in the video was priceless. He has a good arm and moves well in the pocket. Definetly not afraid to lay the wood to a defender, besides the LB he runs over, looks as if he takes down a DB as well. 6’5 210 he’s got good size, may could use a little more bulk, but after all I’m no scout or recruiter, just an avid fan of the big orange!!

Go VOLS!!!

Last season stats 700+ yard 5 td and 8 int.

….and he says β€œIt’s something I became comfortable with but most of the time it was pretty necessary with what I was working with,” said Wegzyn. β€œ

His team in Northville was not the problem.
