Blue Springs, Missouri is turning into a regular stopping point on the recruiting highway for many midwest and southwest college football coaches. More and more coaches are stopping to see the Blue Springs Wildcats coached by Kelly Donohoe and his terrific coaching staff. The Tennessee coaching staff looks to be the latest string of college coaches looking at the 2011 and 2012 prospects within the halls of Blue Springs.
For 2011. the Vols are looking to sign one or maybe two running backs and for Blue Springs High they currently have one of the nation’s fastest rising running backs in the nation in Darrian Miller. Miller stands in at 5’10 and 180 pounds but it is his amazing blend of speed and power that have caught college coaches’ eyes.
VolNation.com caught up with Darrian Miller who has starred at running back the last two seasons for the Wildcats to hear his opinion and thoughts on the Vols and how his overall recruiting process is shaping up.
“I’ve started the last two seasons and I’ve felt like I did pretty well. Last year I did really well and had a big year.”
Miller and the Wildcats had a terrific season that ended with the Cats playing the Hazelwood Central Hawks for the class six state title. Miller and the Wildcats lost 24-35 but Miller did he best to get his team the title as he rushed the ball 36 times for 181 yards and a score.
Miller rushed the ball 309 times for 2,798 yards and 37 scores for a 9.1 yard-per-carry average and also a 199.9 yard-per-game average. Miller also caught 34 balls for 376 yards and three more scores. As a sophomore Miller carried the ball 229 times for 1,508 yards and 21 scores.
With a very impressive junior and sophomore year, Miller has seen coaches come calling.
“I have offers from Iowa, Kansas, Kansas State, Minnesota, and Wisconsin right now, I think a few others are close to offering as well.”
Miller quickly pointed out though that the Vols look to be very interested in him.
“I talked to Bernard (Thomas) who is my teammate and the coaches at Tennessee are having him call them this week and they told him to tell me they love my film. I am not even sure how they got a hold of my highlight tape because they’ve never asked me for it. They send me lots of mail and now that they got a hold of my tape I am starting to hear from the Vols even more and more now.”
Even without an offer Miller looks to be very seriously interested in Tennessee.
“Well I know Bernard likes the Vols a lot and it would be cool to play with him if he were to go there. I also know that the new staff is trying to turn things around it sounds like. I don’t know much about the new staff but what I have heard is good things. I also like the fact that Tennessee plays in the toughest conference in the nation and that will get me ready for the next level if I am blessed enough.”
Miller recently visited Kansas for a junior day visit and early reports are the visit went very well. With that said Miller informed VolNation.com that a decision will come when he feels like he’s ready and knows it is the right one.
“Right now I am taking things as they come and I will decide when I am ready.”
Miller doesn’t know much right now of what he’s looking for in a college but does know he wants to see a few things.
“I’d like to see a program that is consistent and no coaches leaving,” stated Miller. “I also want to see a program where the coaching staff and the players get along really well and the bond between the players is big too.”
