ForumsTennessee sophomore defensive back Janzen Jackson was named to the second team of the 2010 All-Southeastern Conference Coaches’ Football Team as announced today by the league. Jackson was the lone Volunteer named to the squad.
A native of Lake Charles, La., Jackson started all 12 games for the Vols this season at free safety and has played in 22 career games, including 21 starts, in his two seasons at Tennessee. He ranked third on the team this year and led the Tennessee secondary with 65 tackles, and his four interceptions ranked second on the Vols and tied for fifth in the SEC. Jackson also tied for the team lead with nine passes defended, a total that ranked 10th in the conference (0.75 per game).
Additionally, the 6-foot, 187-pound defensive back returned his four interceptions for a total of 114 yards and also recorded 4.0 tackles for loss, one sack and one quarterback hurry. He made a career-high 11 tackles, including a tackle for loss, in Tennessee’s 24-14 win over Kentucky in the regular season finale, a victory that made the Vols bowl-eligible in 2010.
Jackson’s selection marks the fourth consecutive season in which a Tennessee defensive back has earned selection to the All-SEC Coaches’ team, as Eric Berry was named to the team in both 2008 and 2009 and Jonathan Hefney earned the honor in 2007. In the last 10 seasons since 2001, Jackson is the seventh Vol defensive back to be named to the All-SEC Coaches’ squad, joining Berry, Hefney, Jason Allen (2004), Rashad Baker (2002), Julian Battle (2002), and Andre Lott (2001).
Jackson and the Vols will play in the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl against the University of North Carolina on Thursday, Dec. 30, at 5:30 p.m. CT at LP Field in Nashville, Tenn.
