Now is not the time to continue to sit and wait for Vescovi to be relevant.. Mashack gives better defense even tho Vescovi is solid defensively... Mashack has better abilities to drive and has prolly shot it better than Vescovi... Vescovi may thrive better coming off the bench...Barnes has to get beyond his hard head and actually do what's needed offensively

If he was going to do so he would have done this months ago. This Issue with Santi and JJ not producing offensively has been going on all season.

Agree... look at his stats yesterday with limited minutes. He at least should be the a quick 6th man vs. Gainey. Go Vols!

Looked like a bit of desperation mode early on when they subbed in Mashack, Gainey and Awaka at the same time.
We quickly saw that fall apart

I’ve said for months that I thought Vescovi coming off the bench would be beneficial for him for a couple reasons. I don’t think him and knecht work well together and it would eliminate a lineup of awaka, mashack and gainey on the court at the same time. For all Vescovis offensive issues he still plays good defense and can handle the ball. Putting him in that first wave of subs would help eliminate the gainey at point disaster we keep insisting on trying

Barnes has had over 30 games to play youth and DEVELOP depth, but he's ridden the Vescovi and JJJ horses into the ground. Yeah, I know baseball and basketball are different, but look at how Vitello develops his younger players and pitchers. If an injury comes, he plugs in the next guy. Look at what Garner does on the DL. He plays kids and grows them. Barnes, come hell or high water, is going to play the same folks over and over again. Can anyone offer a semi-reasonable explanation on why our starters go so many minutes against MSU? Was he trying to spare the kids from being associated with that embarrassment? Is he trying to drive some on the bench into the portal? Saving redshirts? Yeah, I know....the kids aren't "practicing" the way Barnes wants them to so they don't get the "reward" of playing. Instead, he let's Vescovi and JJJ cook in their own juices until they're rendered down into something unrecognizable. Thought he loved those two guys? Maybe start someone else and bring 'em off the bench? Let 'em reset a bit? Hey, he's a HOF coach so I can't pretend to know more, but to do the same things over and over and over....definition of insanity. I really hope this team finds itself during their time off. It would be a shame for this group to go down in flames given the great guys we've got on this roster. It would be nice to see them end on a high note. At least the sweet 16. Surely they can find something in themselves to get that far?

I think the ideal lineup yesterday should have been ZZ DK Mashack Awaka Aidoo, even though they all played like trash for most of the game. Barnes went offensive to get a spark but it never happened. When you’re struggling to make shots, you have to make up for it on defense.

It’s too late in the season to be messing with the starting lineup. But def be quicker to pull starters when they look off. Santi role this year has always been effort and defense. Don’t expect that to suddenly change in the dance. His role is what it is at this point.

When your 5th year senior leaders are playing tentative, you're in trouble come tournament time. That's the time you need that "leadership" to carry you into the spotlight and carry you through. No offense to JJJ and Vescovi, but I have zero faith in those two guys to fill that role.

I wouldn’t start Mashack but he definitely deserves more minutes than Gainey. Which is honestly mind-blowing that this has continued to go on for an entire season.

Gainey was brought in as a 3-point specialist and he is 28% on the season. Mashack has shot fewer 3’s but he is 38%. That’s a massive difference. Maschack also is a far better defender and more composed on the court when things start to go poorly.

Realistically, I wouldn’t play Gainey unless we have a lead. I would refrain from bringing him in next weekend if we are down at any point early because he can shoot you out of games. Maschack just needs to attack the basket and take more shots. He’s been making at a decent clip when he is aggressive.

Vescovi hasn’t had a good defensive game since the Auburn game. Yesterday he was gambling and was out of position throughout. I would bring him off the bench because his play currently is hurting the team. Maybe it would light something into him. Sad given his career but he looks lost. Mashack deserves more minutes.

Because Gainey is our worst shooter among those in the regular rotation.

You keep playing JJJ because of his rebounding....

Mashack played 20+ minutes yesterday--above his average--and it has become clear that he should be getting more minutes and
Gainey or Vescovi fewer. All three play good defense--but Mashack the best of the bunch, AND, surprisingly, he's got a better shooting percentage than the other two, partly if not mostly because he can get in the paint and score. Vescovi has had an excellent career, super asset for us since he arrived, but we need to get some scoring out of him--which of course everyone's been saying most of the season. We're now in now or never territory.

JJJ, Gainey, and Vescovi are streaky. If either JJJ or Santi scores quickly, then we usually win the game. Mashack is under rated. Probably one of the best defensive players in the country- occasionally he goes off on offense. I think Rick does play the hot hand but I don't think it would be horrible if Mashack started. It's not like Rick hasn't done that with other players like ZZ or Lamonte Turner off the bench. Maybe Santi's issues are mental and he doesn't want to make it worse?

I have been advocating for this since mid season, Mashack gives you more to start with, Santi coming off bench for Knecht would hopefully help him find his scoring rhythm.

This should be ZZ,Mashack,Aidoo,Awakas’ team now….give them the bulk of minutes along with DK.We have to play with defense and physicality and I believe these guys give us the best chance.JJJ rebounds but is not a physical defender.I appreciate his and Vescovi contributions throughout the years but it’s time to pass the torch on.My only concern with Coach Barnes is that he seems to be too loyal to his upperclassmen even to a fault.
