Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

Who did we miss on? A high school player? I'm no longer phased by where a 17yo decides to play college football at, since they will likely be somewhere else in 12 months. . .

. . .unless it's DGG. If he goes somewhere else, engage full panic mode.
Same...the staff has decided to invest very selectively when it comes to HS kids, and I am glad. I don't think anybody will outbid us for DGG....it looks like Heupel has decided he REALLY wants to see what his offense can do with an actual ELITE RB.

Hell of a windy night here. I'm in about as protected Anchorage as one can be but were getting 15-18 sustained and gust to 25. Anchor holding but may be long night. Tide changes at 12:30am which adds a dynamic. Wind and current are the same now. Current will be 180 degrees of wind. Got me a tad nervous. Got the anchor alarm set. I'm a few rum punches in though. Beautiful night other than the wind.
Don’t damage my boat!!!

Not a real endearing week for DB's with new staff that we were told could recruit to NFL pedigree, now its we are going to focus on transfers. What happens when the results arent there in the porthole? Last year was the best recruiting class we've had in a long time.

Why cant we seem to hold any momentum?
It's been a recurring theme with this staff, particularly with Coach H. I'm not complaining because the floor is much higher than we've been accustomed to but we never seen to really take the next big step.

It should be about getting and keeping the good you want here. And like it or not we've had too many issues with high profile players to ignore. Something seems off.

It's been 3 of 4 high school players we've missed on. And the three we missed were thought of as better prospects than the one we landed. If it were just one in state kid I wouldn't........ and didn't blink. But 3 in short order makes you think.

Dude...the Heup and staff has decided that we are not going to get in bidding wars for boys that aren't going to do anything but play STs and 3rd-4th string for 2 years anymore...in this new mercenary world it is really STUPID to do so. Look at all the dudes that just transferred out after doing almost nothing big (boys like Boo, Ross and Gibson etc etc etc etc) to earn the HUGE money they got to sign, and then to stay after their FR year despite not really earning it...If..IF..we get in a bidding war over a kid from now on, you can KNOW that it is a kid that the staff thinks is a bona fide big timer that WILL add instant value to the team ON THE FIELD...a kid Like...DGG.

I for one an extremely glad for this shift....now pay attention, all the locals are saying this is the new direction. There is zero reason to give money away to clip board holders and bench warmers. And especially with the complexity of this defense, it is completely asinine imo to spend big money on HS DBs unless they are those extremely rare dudes that are just auto superstars.

This is the new paradigm...get used to it. HS recruiting classes just are not going to get the majority of the big money from us anymore. We are going to focus on a few big timers, roster retention and transfers.
To your first point I don't think we should get in bidding wars like that. But the issue remains, most other flagship of their state type schools don't seem to have the same problems we do in keeping the in state kids they want home.

At the very least, I think you still need to be serious enough in HS recruiting to build team depth. Always chase the freak guys but invest a little in those depth pieces as well, hope they develop into solid contributors. Certain positions are better recruited from the portal, so you know what you're getting.

We also have no idea how high school kids are going to turn out. Sometimes 3* ranking plays like a 5* on the field. Not a fan of dismissing a kid just because he chose a different school.

LSU baseball, winners of 2 of the last 3 NCs, projected to finish 1st in the SEC with 9/16 1st place votes pre-season, #2 preseason nationally, likely the most expensive roster in the country, and the current best HC in the game, finished 9-21 in regular season SEC play and will miss the NCAA tournament.

That's nuts.
