60/40 right nowPrioritizing the portal over developing hs players is all well and good in theory, it’s just that Heupel hasn’t done anything to prove that he’s willing to bid for the top players in the portal. It seems a lot more high risk high reward imo. Now if the strategy is to do something like 65/35 of hs/portal and have the portal guys be instant starters while hs develops a year or two then sure

Exactly! No way should we pout about losing these OL hs players. Sooo many busts or guys that left. Remember Bennett Warren?! That was a massive get at the time and then it became irrelevant since he wasn't ready in his first two years. Dude didn't wanna compete anymore and now he's starting at Minnesota. You're welcome Minnesota. We paid him and coached him up for ya, enjoy your tackle.Maybe more so with skill players. I don't see why we need to break our backs for questionable high school OL, unless it's a talent like Trey Smith, Sanders, etc. Take Satterwhite for example. He was a decently rated recruit and all we got from it was unwashable skidmarks.
I think we should get about 15 high rated hs recruits a year and take the rest from players in the portal who have proven they can play at this level. . . or even some JUCO players. . . even an FCS player or 2. I'd take a star player from the FCS before I'd pay big $ for a 4* hs player.
What is it, a 105 man roster now? 15 hs players a year leaves us with 45 spots for transfers. Actually probably like 55+ transfer spots after some of those hs players wash out.
But the jet skis come in handy every year for 865LiveSo, is the going theory that Heupel and company are going to just save some money? Pocket it? Buy some jet skis maybe?
The budget is what it is you goobers. If they don't spend it on HS recruits, they will spend it on the portal. The only other option is to not spend it at all.
Wonder if she has pumps and a bump? You got to pray just to make it today.
When this all started and everybody thought it was sooo great...I said then that it would turn into pure hellish chaos until a CBA could be hammered out. The players have ALL of the power because without a CBA almost no rules will stand up in court. The college game has changed in all revenue sports. No going back, the courts are making sure of that. Embrace the change and suck of it all. The only thing that changes it, even more toward the pros, is collective bargaining. That is whole nuther can of worms.
Completely agree with many on here on HS recruiting. Unless NIL contracts can make it hard for them to transfer out somehow, only compete for and pay the studs who can play immediately or start by Year 2. Take all others as developmental guys who are low cost. Put the biggest bulk of money into the mercenaries in the portal. It's similar to how the NFL rosters are built.
That has to happen and they need to avoid there being two mega conferences that split from the rest of college athletics. In my opinionnnWhen this all started and everybody thought it was sooo great...I said then that it would turn into pure hellish chaos until a CBA could be hammered out. Everyone said I was stupid for years, that it was not ever going to be possible...and then our AD said the exact same thing I've been saying from the beginning.
It will be messy and tough to implement for all of the reasons that everyone has thrown at me...but it has to happen at some point.
Regardless of if you/we believe someone is a "top portal player," Heupel has brought in a bunch of transfers that contributed. Their hit rate is good.Prioritizing the portal over developing hs players is all well and good in theory, it’s just that Heupel hasn’t done anything to prove that he’s willing to bid for the top players in the portal. That’s one example, now show me ‘24 osu, ‘23 michigan, ‘21-22 uga, 20 bama, 19 lsu, etc etc etcView attachment 834030View attachment 834031View attachment 834032
Oh yeah HS recruiting rankings matter so much. So much so the defending national champs can barely crack the top 10 once in their own conference the last three years.
