'That's so gay' prompts student lawsuit - U.S. Life - MSNBC.com

SANTA ROSA, Calif. - When a few classmates razzed Rebekah Rice about her Mormon upbringing with questions such as, "Do you have 10 moms?" she shot back: "That's so gay."

Those three words landed the high school freshman in the principal's office and resulted in a lawsuit that raises this question: When do playground insults used every day all over America cross the line into hate speech that must be stamped out?

Are we getting a little too p.c.?

Thoughts?

Looks to me like the others singled her out for being mormon, and were looking for a way to get her in trouble.

"The district has a statutory duty to protect gay students from harassment," the district's lawyers argued in a legal brief. "In furtherance of this goal, prohibition of the phrase 'That's so gay' ... was a reasonable regulation."
What a double standard. They have a problem with her saying "that's so gay", but apparently have no problem with the other kids taunting her about her religion. What discipline was given to the kids who were asking her about having 10 moms?

Both cases should be treated equally - ignored.

Using gay as an insult does annoy me greatly, but I can't say I'd ever bring up a lawsuit about it. Whenever its used i just see it as a sign of immaturity.

Superior Court Judge Elaine Rushing plans to issue a ruling in the non-jury trial after final written arguments are submitted in April. Her gag order prevents the two sides from discussing the case./QUOTE]

That's so gay and gag order in the same story. :birgits_giggle:

I have often wondered that if being gay is in fact a genetic predisposition, and not a chosen preference, how in the heck does it continue to be reproduced within the species?
